Overview

UBE (formerly Ube Industries) is a long-established Japanese diversified company founded in 1897, headquartered in Tokyo. Its businesses span chemicals, cement, machinery, and energy, with global influence in polyimide and lithium-ion battery materials.

History

UBE Corporation's history began in 1897 in Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture, with the establishment of the Okinoyama Coal Mine by Sukesaku Watanabe. The enterprise was initially organized as a silent partnership. Coal mining provided the foundation for the industrial development of the Ube area and later supplied the energy and raw materials needed for expansion into manufacturing. In 1914, Ube Shinkawa Iron Works was established as another silent partnership. The company then moved further into industrial materials with the formation of Ube Cement Production in 1923. Nitrogen manufacturing followed in 1933 through Ube Nitrogen Industry. These separate businesses were amalgamated in 1942, creating Ube Industries, Ltd. The consolidation brought mining, ironmaking, cement, and chemical production into a single industrial organization. After the Second World War, Ube Industries developed into a diversified manufacturer rather than remaining solely a mining company. Its chemical portfolio expanded into caprolactam, nylon and other polyamides, synthetic rubber, ammonia, engineering plastics, and polyethylene. The company also built businesses in specialty chemicals, pharmaceutical materials, cement, construction inputs, machinery, metal products, and energy. This diversification connected UBE to automotive, electronics, construction, industrial equipment, and other downstream markets. International development became increasingly important during the 1990s. In 1993, UBE invested in PQM in Spain, an operation later known as Ube Chemical Europe. In 1997, Thai Caprolactam Public Company and Ube Nylon Thailand began operations; the Thai business later became UBE Chemicals (Asia) Public Company. These investments strengthened UBE's position in Asian and European petrochemicals. In 1998, Ube-Mitsubishi Cement Corporation was established as a joint venture with Mitsubishi Materials, extending the company's cement activities through a major Japanese industrial partnership. UBE's later portfolio included specialty and performance materials such as polyimide, liquid electrolytes, dimethyl carbonate, high-purity silicon nitride powder, and nitrogen-separation membranes. Its machinery and metal-products businesses produced equipment such as injection-molding and die-casting machines, as well as aluminum wheels and bridges. The group also developed advanced fiber and ceramic technologies for demanding aerospace and defense-related applications. The former name Ube Industries, Ltd. was eventually replaced by UBE Corporation as the group emphasized its broader materials and technology identity. The company maintains Japanese headquarters in Tokyo, together with major operations, research, plants, terminals, and mineral resources in Ube and other Japanese locations. Its international network has included manufacturing, research, and sales activities in Thailand, Spain, China, the United States, South Korea, Singapore, Germany, Brazil, Taiwan, Mexico, and other markets. UBE has been listed on Japanese securities exchanges and associated with the Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group keiretsu.
