Overview
Ukrainian Journal (Ukrainian: Український журнал, abbreviated УЖ) is a Ukrainian-language information, cultural and political monthly magazine aimed at Ukrainian communities in the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia. It is published by the Ukrainian Journal Foundation (Фундація «Український журнал»), a non-profit organisation established in 2005 to promote the idea of the magazine and to foster cross-cultural dialogue at the intersection of Polish, Ukrainian and Slovak cultures. The magazine is issued monthly, with a paper format of A2; the main Ukrainian-language edition is printed in the Czech Republic, with additional editions in Czech, Polish and Slovak. It is published with financial support from the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. The editorial team is distributed across Prague, Warsaw, Prešov and Kyiv, reflecting the magazine's cross-border readership and its focus on Ukrainian community life in Central Europe, Ukrainian culture in a European context, and social, political and cultural events in Ukraine. The magazine's website includes an archive of previous issues and a special project titled 'War. Chronology', which documents the chronology of the war in Ukraine and analyses hybrid warfare. The editor-in-chief is Petro Andrusechko (Poznań); until 2011 the position was held by Lenka Vích. The publication is a niche but enduring example of diaspora media serving Ukrainian communities abroad.
History
The Ukrainian Journal Foundation was established in 2005 to popularise the idea of a Ukrainian-language magazine in the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia. The foundation operates at the borderland of Polish, Ukrainian and Slovak cultures, organising meetings and events that foster broad intercultural dialogue, and cooperating with other organisations that promote the cultures of Central and Eastern European peoples. The magazine it founded introduces readers in Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic to the life of the Ukrainian community in these countries, to life in Central Europe in general, to Ukrainian culture in a European context, and to social, political and cultural events in Ukraine. The magazine is published monthly, except for a few months in 2010 when one issue covered two months. The paper format is A2. The main Ukrainian-language edition is published in the Czech Republic, with additional editions in Czech, Polish and Slovak. The publication receives financial support from the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. The editorial board is spread across several cities: the Prague editorial team includes Bohdan Kopchak, Valentyna Liulia, Inna Bilanin, Bohdan Zilynskyi, Rene Kochik and Yana Leontieva; the Warsaw editorial team includes Rostyslav Kramar, Petro Tyma, Anna Kozheniovska-Bihun and Yaroslav Prystash; Oles Mushynka represents Prešov in Slovakia; and the Kyiv editorial team includes Bohdana Matiiash, Anastasiia Levkova and Petro Andrusechko. The editor-in-chief is Petro Andrusechko (Poznań); until 2011 the position was held by Lenka Vích. The magazine's website features an archive of all previous issues and a special project titled 'War. Chronology', which documents the chronology of the war in Ukraine and provides analysis of hybrid warfare, including the role of information warfare and manipulation techniques. The publication continues to serve as a platform for Ukrainian diaspora voices in Central Europe.
