Overview

Umie (stylized as umie) is a shopping center located in Kobe Harborland, Chuo-ku, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. It is operated by AEON Mall Co., Ltd. and consists of three interconnected buildings: NORTH MALL, SOUTH MALL, and MOSAIC. The complex opened on April 18, 2013, following a major renovation that unified three previously separate commercial facilities: Ha・Re (formerly Daiei Harborland), Kobe Hankyu, and Kobe Mosaic. The renovation integrated the facilities under a single name and introduced AEON Mall as the operator. The center houses approximately 225 stores across the three buildings and was expected to attract 15 million visitors annually. It offers a mix of fashion, lifestyle goods, dining, entertainment, and services, with tenants including Uniqlo, GU, Toys R Us, and various restaurants. The facility also provides free electric vehicle charging stations in its underground parking lot. Umie is a prominent retail destination in the Kobe waterfront area, serving both local residents and tourists.

History

Umie traces its origins to the development of Kobe Harborland in the early 1990s. The NORTH MALL building opened on October 1, 1992, as Daiei Harborland City and Kou'S Wholesale Membership Club. The SOUTH MALL opened on the same day as Kobe Hankyu, a department store established by Hankyu Department Store. The MOSAIC building, originally Kobe Mosaic, was operated by Hankyu Commercial Development. Over the years, these facilities faced challenges. Daiei withdrew in 2005, and the building was rebranded as Ha・Re in 2007 under Mitsubishi Warehouse's subsidiary DN Building Management. Kobe Hankyu struggled with declining sales and closed on March 11, 2012. In 2013, AEON Mall took over operations and integrated the three buildings into a single shopping center named umie, which reopened on April 18, 2013. The renovation included tenant replacements and a unified brand identity. Since then, umie has become a key retail hub in Kobe, with approximately 225 stores and an expected annual visitation of 15 million. In 2017, AEON STYLE umie opened in the NORTH MALL, replacing a former Izumiya store. The center continues to evolve with new tenants and events.
