Overview

Union Bryggeri was a Norwegian brewery established in 2009 in the former premises of Norske Skog Union on Klosterøya in Skien. It was owned and operated by Macks Ølbryggeri, one of Norway's northernmost and best-known breweries. The new brewery was created at the same time that Trio Bryggeri in Kjørbekk was closed down, and much of Trio's production equipment and many of its employees were transferred to the new operation. Around 25 million Norwegian kroner were invested in the new brewery, and a pub similar to Macks Ølhallen was planned in connection with it. Union Bryggeri produced locally brewed beer varieties, mineral water, and fruit and berry products. In addition, the brewery functioned as a producer of beer and mineral water for its owner Macks Ølbryggeri as well as for Arcus. The brewery was located in a building that had previously housed one of the paper machines of Norske Skog Union on Klosterøya, giving the site an industrial heritage character. In 2012 the brewery was sold to United Bakeries Holding AS and changed its name to Det Lille Presseriet AS. After several years of losses, operations were wound down in 2014. The brand is therefore no longer active, though it remains part of the brewing history of the Skien region and of the Macks Ølbryggeri group.

History

Union Bryggeri was established in 2009 in the old premises of Norske Skog Union on Klosterøya in Skien, Norway. It was owned and operated by Macks Ølbryggeri. The creation of the new brewery coincided with the closure of Trio Bryggeri at Kjørbekk. Trio Bryggeri had been a family-owned company founded in 1924; Macks Ølbryggeri acquired a stake in it in 2000 and took full ownership in 2004. When Trio Bryggeri was shut down in 2009, most of its employees were given jobs at the new Union Bryggeri, and some production equipment was transferred as well. The brewery was set up in a building that had previously housed one of the paper machines of Norske Skog Union on Klosterøya. Part of the production equipment from Trio Bryggeri was moved there, and about 25 million Norwegian kroner were invested in the new brewery. A pub similar to Macks Ølhallen was planned in connection with the brewery. Union Bryggeri produced locally brewed beer varieties, mineral water, and fruit and berry products. It also served as a producer of beer and mineral water for its owner Macks Ølbryggeri and for Arcus. In 2012 the brewery was sold to United Bakeries Holding AS and changed its name to Det Lille Presseriet AS. After several years of losses, operations were wound down in 2014. The Union Bryggeri brand thus ceased to be active, though its history remains tied to the brewing heritage of Skien and to Macks Ølbryggeri.
