Overview

UnityPoint Health is a nonprofit, integrated health system headquartered in West Des Moines, Iowa, in the United States. It operates acute-care hospitals, community clinics, home health and hospice services, and affiliated physician groups across Iowa, western Illinois and southern Wisconsin. The system is one of the largest health-care providers in the Upper Midwest and is known for its regional hospital brands, including Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Iowa Lutheran Hospital and Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines, as well as St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids and Methodist hospitals in the Quad Cities and Peoria areas. The organization traces its roots to the 1993 merger of Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Iowa Lutheran Hospital, which created Iowa Health System. Over the following two decades the system expanded through affiliations with hospitals and clinics across Iowa and neighboring states, growing into a multi-state network. In 2013 the system rebranded as UnityPoint Health to present a single, unified identity across its member hospitals and clinics. UnityPoint Health is a nonprofit entity governed by a board and led by a chief executive. Its services span primary and specialty care, hospital-based acute care, women's and children's services, cancer care, behavioral health, home health and hospice, and accountable-care arrangements with insurers and employers. The system also operates a clinically integrated network and works with academic and community partners on workforce and population-health initiatives. Like many U.S. regional health systems, UnityPoint Health has faced financial pressure from reimbursement changes, labor costs and payer mix, and has pursued partnerships and restructuring to sustain its operations. It remains a major employer in Iowa and a significant provider brand in the region.

History

UnityPoint Health's history begins with the 1993 merger of Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, which formed Iowa Health System. The new system was designed to pool resources among Des Moines hospitals and to extend shared services to community hospitals across Iowa. Through the late 1990s and 2000s, Iowa Health System grew by affiliating with hospitals and clinics in Iowa, western Illinois and southern Wisconsin. Member organizations retained local names while gaining access to system-level purchasing, information technology, clinical protocols and managed-care contracting. The system also developed physician groups and home health services, broadening its reach beyond inpatient care. In 2013 the organization rebranded as UnityPoint Health, adopting a single system-wide identity while keeping well-known local hospital names such as Iowa Methodist, Iowa Lutheran, Blank Children's Hospital and St. Luke's. The rebrand was intended to make the multi-state network legible to patients, employers and payers as one integrated provider. In the 2010s and 2020s UnityPoint Health continued to invest in population health, accountable care and clinically integrated networks, and pursued partnerships with insurers and other providers. The system, like peers across the United States, has navigated reimbursement pressure, rising labor costs and capacity constraints, and has undertaken restructuring and cost programs to stabilize finances. It remains a major employer and provider brand in Iowa and the surrounding region.

Class-action lawsuit alleges UnityPoint Health rounded down hourly workers' time

A potential class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of UnityPoint Health hourly employees alleges the hospital chain violated federal and Illinois wage-and-hour laws by configuring its Kronos/UKG timekeeping system to round down workers' actual clock-in and clock-out times, resulting in unpaid wages. Plaintiffs Jennifer Randolph and Maggie McMahon sued Iowa Health System, doing business as UnityPoint Health, in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa. UnityPoint previously denied the same allegations in an April 2026 Illinois case that was dropped.
