Urwerk

URWERK is a Swiss watch brand whose official birth is dated to 1997, when it first presented its creations at the Academy of Independent Watchmakers (AHCI). The brand was conceived by Felix Baumgartner, his brother Thomas, and Martin Frei, who met in December 1995 and formed the idea for URWERK on January 1st, 1996. URWERK prioritizes quality over quantity with a limited annual production of approximately 200 timepieces, and is distinguished by in-house production of satellite components, meticulous hand-finishing, and cutting-edge technology.

URWERK's beginnings trace to a student party in December 1995, where Felix Baumgartner, his brother Thomas, and Martin Frei met over beers and rock music and shared their philosophies on time. The idea for URWERK was born the following morning, January 1st, 1996. Felix Baumgartner, URWERK master watchmaker and co-founder, was born in Schaffhausen into a watchmaking family and learned watchmaking in his father's atelier, which restored significant historical clocks; he enrolled in the watchmaking school in Solothurn and was awarded his diploma in 1995. Martin Frei, URWERK chief designer and co-founder, was born in Winterthur; he gained a diploma in Graphic Design from the School of Visual Arts of Zurich in 1989 and a Bachelor of Arts at the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst in Luzern, where he studied under Roman Signer. 1997 marks the official birth of URWERK, when the brand presented its creations for the first time at the Academy of Independent Watchmakers (AHCI), with its debut model showcasing a bold wandering hours indication.
