Overview

USMP TV is a Peruvian open television channel focused on cultural, educational, and documentary programming. It is owned by the Universidad de San Martín de Porres (USMP) and was the first educational broadcaster with national coverage in Peru. The channel began test transmissions in 2011 after being acquired by USMP and officially launched in 2016. It broadcasts on digital terrestrial television in Lima and is available on cable systems such as Movistar TV. The channel also operates a music subchannel, USMP TV Música, and has formed alliances with other public and educational broadcasters in Latin America. Its programming targets students and general audiences interested in culture, education, and music.

History

The channel that would become USMP TV originated as Canal 33 UHF in Lima. In 1990, it was launched as Colvisión by Empresa Interamericana de Radiodifusión (EIR). It later became Cubo TV in 2008 and was closed in 2010. In 2011, the station was acquired by Universidad de San Martín de Porres (USMP) and began test transmissions with music videos and educational content. On November 6, 2012, the channel premiered an official logo and moved its headquarters to Av. Brasil 1857 in Jesús María. On June 30, 2014, it launched on digital terrestrial television (DTT) on virtual channel 33.1 in HD, ceasing analog transmissions on UHF channel 33. On January 1, 2016, the channel temporarily returned to analog and then relaunched as USMP TV on DTT with cultural, educational, and documentary programming. On September 12, 2016, it added a music subchannel, USMP TV Música, on channel 33.2. In March 2017, it began broadcasting via Intelsat 34 satellite. On September 18, 2017, USMP TV moved to virtual channel 12.1, with USMP TV Música on 12.2. In April 2020, it formed an alliance with Panamericana Televisión to co-produce the program 'Tiempo para aprender' and acquired 10% of the television station's shares. It later joined Movistar TV's lineup. In 2022, the channel received the Ibero-American Innovation Award for its educational work in the Diversity and Vulnerable Groups category and formed an alliance with Colombia's Canal TRO.
