Overview

USRobotics (USR) was founded in 1976 in an Illinois garage and was named after U.S. Robot and Mechanical Men from Isaac Asimov's I, Robot. Early modem designs by founders Casey Cowell, Steve Muka, and Paul Collard produced the USR310, USR330, and Phone Link 300 acoustic couplers transmitting at 300 baud. The company became a leader in dial-up modem technology, with the Sportster and Courier modem brands making USR modems a choice for the Internet revolution. In 2013, USR was acquired by UNICOM Global. Today USR provides connectivity hardware for businesses, including cellular M2M modems, copper and fiber network TAPs, and 56K internal and external modems, supporting applications such as data transfer, remote management, broadband backup, point-of-sale, M2M, and IoT.

History

USRobotics was founded in classic hi-tech startup fashion in an Illinois garage in 1976 and was named after "the greatest company in the known galaxy" – U.S. Robot and Mechanical Men – from the science fiction classic I, Robot by Isaac Asimov. Early modem designs by founders Casey Cowell, Steve Muka, and Paul Collard produced the USR310, USR330, and the Phone Link 300 – acoustic couplers that transmitted analog signals at 300 baud. USR was one of the first companies to offer high-speed dial-up modems, and the Sportster modem brand was one of the company's many products designed to connect people to the Internet and each other. It is the USR Sportster, and the Courier modem, that made USR modems the modem of choice for the Internet revolution. The USR-310, one of the first USR modems, allowed customers to connect to other computers using their existing phone at speeds up to 300 Bps. Today's USR modems operate at 56,000 bits per second. In 2013, USR was acquired by UNICOM Global, one of the world's largest private software companies with over 50 divisions world-wide, founded by President and CEO, Mr. Corry Hong.
