Overview

Vagonmash (ООО «ВАГОНМАШ») is a Russian rail-vehicle manufacturer based in Saint Petersburg. Its plant traces its origins to 1874, when it was founded by the Scottish-born industrialist F. K. Reshtke as a metalworking works. In 1897 the enterprise was reoriented toward railcar production and renamed the Petersburg Railcar Works (Петербургский вагоностроительный завод). Over the following century it became one of Russia's principal builders of passenger and metro rolling stock, and today it focuses on the production of metro cars, the repair of rail vehicles, import-substitution work, and technical expertise on railcar-building products. The company's product history spans suburban and long-distance passenger coaches, the first Soviet all-metal railcar (1939), serial all-metal coach production from 1946, and metro multiple-unit trains from 1968. In 2001 it built the first metro train in the CIS with an asynchronous traction drive, and in 2005 it supplied the trains that opened the Kazan Metro. It has also produced luxury-class dining cars (2007) and metro cars for the Warsaw Metro built to European Union standards (2008). Vagonmash operates as a private limited liability company (ООО) and presents itself as a specialist in metro-car manufacturing and rolling-stock repair, with additional activities in import substitution, product expertise, and the disposal of surplus assets. Its official website lists sections covering the company, quality management, activities, media, personnel and careers, and contacts. The company is headquartered in Saint Petersburg and serves the Russian and CIS rail and metro markets.

History

The plant that became Vagonmash was founded in 1874 by F. K. Reshtke, an industrialist of Scottish origin, and initially specialized in metalworking. In 1897 it was reoriented toward the production of railcars and renamed the Petersburg Railcar Works (Петербургский вагоностроительный завод). In 1911 the works joined the «Продвагон» syndicate, a monopoly grouping in the Russian railcar industry. After the 1917 revolution the plant passed into the ownership of the Soviet state, was nationalized, and was reorganized as the «5th State Mechanical and Cart Works». In 1922 it was named after I. E. Yegorov, a participant in the revolutionary movement. During the 1920s and 1930s the works produced passenger coaches for suburban trains and long-distance services. In 1939 it built the first Soviet all-metal railcar. During the Great Patriotic War (World War II) the Leningrad Railcar Works (ЛВЗ) switched to military production; suburban coaches were converted to carry wounded personnel as part of military-sanitary trains. In 1946 serial production of all-metal coaches began. In 1968 the Leningrad Railcar Works started serial production of multiple-unit trains for metro rolling stock. In 2001 the enterprise built the first metro train in the CIS with an asynchronous traction drive. In 2005 the Kazan Metro opened with trains produced by ZAO «VAGONMASH». In 2007 a luxury-class dining car was produced. In 2008 the company manufactured cars for the Warsaw Metro in accordance with European Union requirements and standards. The company continues to operate as ООО «ВАГОНМАШ», with activities spanning metro-car production, repair, import substitution, product expertise, and the disposal of surplus assets.
