Overview

VAROPreem is a leading energy company created through the combination of VARO and Preem. It operates an integrated value chain from sourcing and manufacturing to storage, distribution, marketing, and trading, combining conventional and sustainable energies. Headquartered in Zug, Switzerland, it describes itself as Europe's third-largest independent refiner and Europe's second-largest producer of renewable fuels, with 1.3 million tonnes per year of HVO and SAF capacity. Its network includes six strategically located manufacturing hubs and 120+ terminals accessible across Europe, meeting nearly 10% of road and marine fuel demand.

History

VAROPreem was created through the combination of VARO and Preem. In 2025, VARO announced the acquisition of Preem AB, and VARO completed the acquisition of Preem and created VAROPreem, delivering its 2022 transformation strategy ahead of schedule. In 2026, VAROPreem acquired Sunpine, the world's largest Raw Tall Oil bio-refinery, and agreed the sale of Road B.V. to Hametha B.V. Earlier milestones include the 2024 acquisition of elexon, Gunvor joining VARO as a 50% partner to develop a major SAF and HVO plant in Rotterdam, and VARO launching VARO Renewable Diesel (HVO100). In 2023, VARO increased its stake in E-Flux, announced the acquisition of 80% of the shares in Bio Energy Coevorden (BEC), and acquired Renewable Energy Services (RES).
