Overview

Veeam is a privately held information-technology company specializing in data protection, backup, disaster recovery, replication, and availability software. Founded in 2006 by Ratmir Timashev and Andrei Baronov, the company initially concentrated on the rapidly expanding market for virtualized workloads. Its early products addressed monitoring, reporting, and management of virtual infrastructure before Veeam broadened its focus toward backup and recovery. The company’s central product is Veeam Backup & Replication, which began as a protection platform for VMware environments and later expanded to Microsoft Hyper-V and other infrastructure types. The platform is designed to create recoverable copies of workloads, support replication and disaster-recovery processes, and provide capabilities such as compression, deduplication, recovery testing, and centralized management. Veeam subsequently added agents and specialized products for physical computers, Microsoft workloads, public-cloud services, software-as-a-service applications, and Kubernetes environments. Veeam’s portfolio includes products for Microsoft 365, Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Kubernetes, Nutanix AHV, physical Windows and Linux systems, and service-provider environments. Its product strategy reflects the increasing distribution of enterprise data across on-premises infrastructure, private and public clouds, endpoint systems, SaaS platforms, and containerized applications. Rather than treating backup as limited to traditional data centers, Veeam positions data protection as part of business continuity, cyber resilience, and operational availability. The company operates through a global sales, partner, and service-provider ecosystem. Its regional operations include offices and headquarters for major geographic markets, while Prague has been described as its largest research-and-development center. Veeam sells directly and through channel partners, managed service providers, and cloud providers. This partner-oriented approach supports backup-as-a-service and disaster-recovery-as-a-service offerings in addition to conventional enterprise software deployments. Veeam has also expanded through acquisitions. The purchase of nworks strengthened integration between VMware management and Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard enterprise-management platforms. Its acquisition of N2WS added cloud-native backup and disaster-recovery capabilities for AWS, while the purchase of Kasten broadened the portfolio into Kubernetes data management. In 2024, Veeam acquired Coveware, a ransomware incident-response and recovery company, extending its relevance from preventive backup toward ransomware preparedness and recovery operations. Insight Partners announced the acquisition of Veeam in 2020 in a transaction reported at approximately $5 billion. The deal was accompanied by a move of the company’s headquarters to the United States. Veeam remains private and continues to operate as an independent software company. Under CEO Anand Eswaran, the business has emphasized enterprise growth, expanded partnerships, and a broader data-resilience platform spanning backup, recovery, security-related capabilities, and cloud-native workloads.

History

Veeam was established in 2006 by Ratmir Timashev and Andrei Baronov, who had previously founded Aelita Software. After Aelita was sold to Quest Software in 2004, the two entrepreneurs created Veeam to address the management and protection challenges created by server virtualization. The company’s first office opened in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Veeam’s earliest products were Veeam Monitor and Veeam Reporter. These tools concentrated on monitoring, reporting, analysis, and documentation for virtual infrastructures. In 2007, the company released FastSCP, a free utility for copying virtual-machine files. The product helped establish Veeam’s understanding of virtual-machine workflows and provided a foundation for later data-protection software. In 2008, Veeam introduced Veeam Backup & Replication. Initially focused on VMware vSphere virtual machines, the product combined image-based backup and replication with incremental processing, compression, and deduplication. It became the company’s principal platform and helped define its identity in the virtualization backup market. Veeam later added support for Microsoft Hyper-V, enabling the product to serve mixed virtualization environments. Veeam expanded its management capabilities through the 2008 acquisition of nworks. The transaction supported integrations between VMware environments and Microsoft System Center Operations Manager as well as Hewlett-Packard OpenView. The resulting products were later renamed Veeam Management Pack and Veeam Smart Plug-In. In 2014, Veeam held its first VeeamON conference in Las Vegas, creating a recurring forum focused on data protection and availability. The company broadened beyond virtual machines during the middle of the 2010s. In 2015, it introduced Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE for physical Windows endpoints and Veeam FastSCP for Microsoft Azure. In 2016, it launched Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 and Veeam Availability Orchestrator. The former addressed protection of Microsoft 365 data, while the latter supported disaster-recovery planning, testing, documentation, and reporting across multiple hypervisors. In 2017, Veeam released Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows, Veeam Agent for Linux, and Veeam Availability Console. These products extended protection to physical workloads and gave service providers tools for administering distributed backup and recovery environments. That same year, Veeam acquired N2WS, an AWS-focused cloud backup and disaster-recovery company. Veeam later sold N2WS back to its original founders in 2019 following discussions with the United States government. Leadership changed during this period. Peter C. McKay joined as president and chief operating officer in 2016 and later became co-CEO alongside Baronov. McKay left during a restructuring in late 2018, after which Baronov served as sole CEO for a period. In January 2020, Insight Partners announced an acquisition valued at approximately $5 billion and plans to move Veeam’s headquarters to the United States. Bill Largent became CEO and chairman in 2020, followed by Anand Eswaran as CEO in 2021. Veeam’s product expansion accelerated in 2020, when the company reported 16 releases across its portfolio. These included new versions of Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam ONE, Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV, Veeam Service Provider Console, Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure, Veeam Availability Orchestrator, Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, and Veeam Backup for AWS. The company also acquired Kasten in 2020, adding a Kubernetes-focused data-management and disaster-recovery business. Under Eswaran, Veeam has increasingly presented itself as a provider of comprehensive data resilience rather than only a virtualization backup vendor. Its coverage now includes public-cloud infrastructure, SaaS applications, containers, physical servers, endpoints, and traditional virtual environments. The 2024 acquisition of Coveware added ransomware incident response and recovery expertise. Veeam remains privately held by Insight Partners, with its main headquarters in Kirkland, Washington, and a global operating and partner network.
