Overview
Vialand is a leisure and retail complex located in the Eyüp district of Istanbul, in Turkey's Marmara region. It opened on 26 May 2013 and was inaugurated in the presence of then Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The project is built on a site of more than 60 hectares and combines several distinct components: a theme park of more than 20 hectares, a shopping centre of about 35 hectares, and an open-air performance hall with 15,000 seats, all set within a landscaped green area of around 10 hectares. The shopping centre is arranged over two levels, one covered and one open-air, and includes a small tramway line. Some zones are decorated to evoke the old city of Istanbul or Ottoman style, giving the retail area a themed character rather than a conventional mall layout. The theme park offers a mix of roller coasters, water rides and family attractions, with many rides installed at the 2013 opening and additional attractions added in 2014. Vialand positions itself as a destination-scale entertainment and shopping complex rather than a single attraction, aiming to serve both Istanbul residents and visitors to the city. Its combination of retail, rides and live entertainment places it among the larger leisure developments in Istanbul. The complex is promoted through its official website, which provides information in English as well as Turkish.
History
Vialand is a leisure and shopping complex in the Eyüp district of Istanbul, in Turkey's Marmara region. Construction of the complex began in September 2011, following an investment reported at 1.15 million Turkish lira (about 481,000 euros). The park was inaugurated on Sunday 26 May 2013 in the presence of the then Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The development was conceived as a multi-part destination rather than a standalone amusement park. On a site of more than 60 hectares, it brought together a theme park of more than 20 hectares, a shopping centre of about 35 hectares, and an open-air performance hall with 15,000 seats, set within a green landscaped area of around 10 hectares. The shopping centre was arranged over two levels, one covered and one open-air, and was equipped with a small tramway line. Certain areas were decorated to recall the old city of Istanbul or Ottoman style. The theme park opened with a broad range of attractions, many of them installed in 2013. These included the 360 Star Shape from Zierer, the Adalet kulesi drop tower from Far Fabbri, a double-deck carousel from SBF Visa Group, bumper cars, the Gelin Oynayalım play area, the Hayal Perdesi 4-D cinema, the Jet Ski ride from Zierer, the Kahraman İtfaiyeciler Fire Brigade from SBF Visa Group, the King Kong ride from Huss Rides, the Minik Kaşifler scenic cruise, the Minik Yarışçılar car circuit, the Neşeli Çiftlik ride from SBF Visa Group, the Safari Tüneli interactive dark ride from ETF Ride Systems and Alterface, the Saray Salıncağı flying chairs from Zierer, the Uçan Çocuklar plane ride from SBF Visa Group, the Vialand Ekspres panoramic train, and the Zindan ghost train from ETF Ride Systems. In 2014 the park added further attractions, including Fatih's Dream, a tow boat ride by Intamin and Heimotion, and the SpongeBob SquarePants 4-D and Dora & Diego's 4-D Adventure cinema experiences. These additions extended the park's family and themed entertainment offer beyond its original 2013 opening lineup. Vialand thus represents a large-scale Turkish leisure investment of the early 2010s, integrating retail, rides and live performance on a single Istanbul site.
