Overview

Vigma is a Belarusian record label founded in 1993 and described in Russian-language sources as the largest producer of music discs in Belarus. The company began its activity with music audio cassettes and later became a major manufacturer and distributor of compact discs, thematic compilations and albums by well-known Belarusian performers and composers. Its catalogue has spanned mainstream Belarusian pop and estrada as well as rock and alternative acts. In March 2011 Vigma signed an agreement on the production and distribution of music albums released by the Belarusian Music Alternative (BMA) of Vitaly Supranovich. As a result, the label began more widely issuing albums by Belarusian-language artists such as Zmicer Vajciushkevich, Ales Kamocki and Tatyana Belanogaya, and by groups including Eihelstraat (Mogilev), Guda, IQ48, Krambambulya, Palac, PANaNieba (Vileyka), Re1ikt (Svetlogorsk), BLAGI MAT!!! (Mogilev) and Open Space (Minsk). In 2011 the company sold half of its music albums at petrol stations, with the rest going to hypermarkets and small shops. That same year it announced it was ending production of music audio cassettes, the format with which Vigma had once started. Vigma has collaborated with many well-known Belarusian performers and composers, including V. Rainchik, I. Luchenok, V. Vuyachich, E. Khank, V. Provalinsky, L. Bartkevich, A. Yarmolenko, A. Solodukha and the group The Road Dogs. It also releases solo compact discs by well-known performers (among them Polina Smolova, Viktor Kalina and Gyunesh Abasova) and various thematic compilations of popular Belarusian music such as "Muzykalnye novinki" and "Pervy Internatsional". Recognition came in 2011 when the editorial award of the music portal Experty.by named Vigma the best label of the year. Critic Alexey Alexandrov of "Belorusy i rynok" commented that it was a veteran label that had suddenly taken a very firm grip on Belarusian-language music and was releasing albums that, despite everything, sold very well.
