Overview

Villacher is a beer brand rooted in the region of Villach, Austria. The Villacher Stadtbrauerei combines traditional brewing art with innovative ideas, offering a diverse selection of beer specialties. It is described as Austria's southernmost brewery and one of the country's best-known beer brands. The brewery's history dates back to 1738, with the modern Stadtbrauerei founded in 1858.

History

The history of Villacher beer begins in 1738 with innkeeper Jakob Fischer, who brewed Steinbier using hot stones. In 1858, the Steinbier brewery became a modern steam-boiler brewery, marking the birth of the Villacher Stadtbrauerei. The name 'Villacher' was officially adopted in 1900 with the award of the Villacher city coat of arms. Johann Koutnik played a key role in modernizing the brewery, including installing artificial cooling and switching to electric operation in 1911. In 1919, the Vereinigte Kärntner Brauereien AG was formed together with Gösser, Reininghaus, and Puntigam.
