Overview

JSC "Vitebskdrev" (also spelled Vitsebskdrev) is a Belarusian woodworking enterprise based in Vitebsk, founded in 1927. It is one of the country's oldest and most established wood-processing companies, with a history spanning nearly a century. The company operates as an open joint-stock company and is part of the state-owned concern "Bellesbumprom" through the Borwood holding. Its core business is the production and sale of wood-based panels, including MDF (medium-density fiberboard), HDF (high-density fiberboard), laminated MDF/HDF, and moisture-resistant MDF.H boards. It also produces laminated flooring under the "KROK" brand, as well as doors, wooden windows, sawn timber, planed mouldings, and pallets. The company is notable for being the only woodworking enterprise in Belarus to have launched production of MDF.H, an innovative moisture-resistant panel. According to its official website, it produces 65,000 m³ of finished products per year, employs around 400 people, serves 330 buying organizations, operates 200 units of equipment, and has partners in 37 countries. The company's central factory laboratory is accredited for testing woodworking products, environmental and radiation control, and is the only laboratory in Belarus that tests laminated floor panels for light resistance. In recent years, Vitebskdrev has faced financial challenges, reporting a net loss in 2018, but remains an active producer in the Belarusian woodworking sector.

History

The history of Vitebskdrev dates back to 1927 (or 1928 according to some sources), when a plywood factory was established in Vitebsk. In 1944, a house-building combine (DSK) began operations, and in 1947–1948 the sawmill and drying shops (the first phase of the DSK) were commissioned. In 1960, a large-panel housing construction shop was put into operation, and in 1971 a fiberboard (DVP) shop started working. In 1966, the house-building combine was reorganized into a woodworking combine. Because of its post-war focus on house building, the enterprise was initially subordinated to construction management bodies: until 1953 it was part of the Main Directorate of Industrial Housing Construction and Production Enterprises of the Ministry of Construction of Heavy Industry of the USSR; from 1953 to 1957 it was under the Ministry of Construction of the USSR; and from 1957 to 1973 it was in the system of the Ministry of Industrial Construction of the BSSR. In 1973, it was transferred to the Ministry of Forestry and Woodworking Industry of the BSSR and simultaneously transformed into the Vitebsk Production Woodworking Association, which in 1975 became the production association "Vitebskdrev". In 1988, PO "Vitebskdrev" was reorganized into the Vitebsk Production Woodworking Association "Vitebskdrev" and transferred to the Ministry of Construction of the BSSR, which in 1994 became the Ministry of Architecture and Construction of the Republic of Belarus. In 1995, the association was transformed into an open joint-stock company and transferred to the state concern "Bellesbumprom". By 1996, its main products were fiberboard (DVP) and particle board (DSP), boxes, door and window blocks. Between 2011 and 2014, a plant for the production of MDF boards was built. In 2016, Vitebskdrev ceased production of particle board (DSP). Since 2016, the plant has been part of the "Holding of Woodworking Industry Organizations" (since 2018, the "Borwood" holding). In 2018, the enterprise became a resident of the free economic zone "Vitebsk". According to the results of 2018, the company's revenue amounted to 42.8 million rubles (about 21 million dollars), placing it 5th among nine enterprises of the holding. The net loss in 2018 was 16.1 million rubles (about 8 million dollars).
