History
VLI was established on August 9, 2010, as Vale Logística de Carga Geral S.A., a holding company created from Vale's general cargo logistics division. Its purpose was to consolidate rail and port assets for general cargo transport, excluding iron ore logistics assets. In April 2011, the company was renamed Vale Logística Integrada S.A., and later in 2011 it became VLI S.A., with the acronym meaning Valor da Logística Integrada. On November 30, 2011, Vale Operações Ferroviárias S.A. was renamed VLI Multimodal S.A., a subsidiary of VLI S.A. VLI Multimodal holds as subsidiaries Ferrovia Centro-Atlântica S.A. (FCA S.A.) and Ferrovia Norte-Sul S.A. (FNS S.A.). The FCA was acquired by Vale during the privatization of RFFSA, and the FNS was acquired by Vale in 2007 for R$1.478 billion, along with grain transshipment terminals and port terminals in Maranhão, São Paulo, Espírito Santo and Sergipe. In April 2014, Vale completed the sale of 20% of VLI to Mitsui for R$1.5 billion and 15.9% to the FI-FGTS for R$1.2 billion. In August 2014, Brookfield Asset Management acquired 26.5% for R$2 billion, ending Vale's control of the company. From that point, VLI began to develop its own culture and governance system. In December 2020, BNDESPar entered the shareholder base by purchasing 8% of Vale's stake for R$1.22 billion. The company operates an extensive rail network and port terminals across Brazil, serving the Southeast, Goiás, Bahia, Ceará, Sergipe, Maranhão, Tocantins and the Federal District.
