Overview

Vöslauer is an Austrian mineral water brand produced by Vöslauer Mineralwasser GmbH, headquartered in Bad Vöslau, Lower Austria. The company describes itself as the most successful water in Austria and has built its identity around a single deep source: a spring 660 metres deep that the brand calls '15,000 years young', yielding naturally mineralised water that is bottled in still, mild, sparkling and strongly sparkling versions. The brand's roots reach back to the Vöslau thermal spa tradition, but the modern commercial enterprise was founded in 1936 as the Vöslauer Heilquellenverwertungs Gesellschaft, established by the Zentralsparkasse. Today the company is part of the Ottakringer Konzern, one of Austria's major beverage groups, and reports 207 employees, 2024 revenue of about €125 million and an export share of roughly 20 percent. Vöslauer's product range extends well beyond plain mineral water. The portfolio includes Vöslauer Natürliches Mineralwasser in numerous flavours such as apple-cherry, raspberry-lemon, lemon, raspberry, pineapple, elderflower, blackcurrant, mango, lemongrass, orange and raspberry-ginger; Vöslauer Balance, a wellness drink line made with natural herbal extracts; Vöslauer Bio-Limonade; and the licensed brand Almdudler. The company also markets Sport and Sport+Magnesium formats, a Junior line, and packaging innovations including PET-Mehrweg (returnable PET), Glas-Mehrweg (returnable glass) and the 'Bleibt-dran-Verschluss' tethered cap. Its marketing leans on lifestyle themes such as '#jungbleiben' (stay young) and collaborations like Vöslauer X Raus and limited editions. Vöslauer has a long record of firsts in the Austrian water market. It introduced the 6-bottle crate for home transport in 1975, the 1.5-litre lightweight PET bottle in 1996, still mineral water under the 'Vöslauer ohne' name in 1998, and the Vöslauer Balance wellness drink in 2000. It has also used prominent design and celebrity collaborations, including labels by Friedensreich Hundertwasser in 1990 and its first testimonial, Claudia Schiffer, in 1999. The brand positions itself around quality, responsibility, innovation and design, and it operates the historic Thermalbad Vöslau as part of its heritage and employee benefits.

History

The Vöslau spring has been known since at least the 12th century, when an 'Adololdus de Veseloue' is first documented in 1136. In 1822 Moritz I, Count von Fries, built a basin at the spring and opened the Fries'sche Badeanstalt, the origin of the Thermalbad Vöslau. Three years later Dr. Malfatti von Monteregio, Beethoven's personal physician, analysed the spring water, recognised its healing power and had the Vöslauer Ursprungsquelle (original spring) captured for the first time. In 1873, with the involvement of Vienna Ringstrasse architect Theophil Hansen, the thermal spa was substantially redesigned to accommodate the growing number of visitors, as Vöslau had become a popular health resort. The modern company dates to 1936, when the Zentralsparkasse founded the Vöslauer Heilquellenverwertungs Gesellschaft, the predecessor of today's Vöslauer Mineralwasser GmbH. The post-war decades saw the brand become a household name in Austria. In 1975 Vöslauer made home transport convenient by introducing the 6-bottle crate. In 1990 the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser designed the labels for Vöslauer's restaurant (Gastronomie) bottles. In 1993 the new Vöslauer bottling centre began operation. The 1990s and 2000s were a period of repeated market firsts. In 1996 Vöslauer introduced the 1.5-litre lightweight PET bottle, a milestone for the Austrian mineral water market. In 1998 it launched still mineral water as 'Vöslauer ohne', reinforcing its claim to innovation leadership. In 1999 it presented its first testimonial, Claudia Schiffer, and introduced Vöslauer Sport in a practical 0.75-litre bottle. In 2000 it brought Vöslauer Balance to market, described as a world first: a wellness drink with purely natural ingredients from herbal extracts based on Vöslauer mineral water. In 2001 it introduced further products (the source text is truncated at this point). In the 21st century Vöslauer has continued to expand its range into flavoured waters, organic lemonades, sports and junior lines, and packaging formats such as returnable PET and glass and tethered caps. The company is part of the Ottakringer Konzern, and its registered office and billing address are at Ottakringer Platz 1 in Vienna, while production remains at Quellenstraße 1 in Bad Vöslau. As of the mid-2020s the company reported 207 employees, 2024 revenue of about €125 million and an export share of about 20 percent, with products sold in Austria and Germany. It also continues to operate the historic Thermalbad Vöslau, which is offered as a benefit to employees and their close relatives.
