W drodze

W drodze (Polish for "On the Way") is a Polish Catholic monthly magazine and publishing house operated by the Polish Dominican Province. The magazine was founded in 1973 by three Dominicans — Marcin Babraj OP, Jan Andrzej Kłoczowski OP, and Konrad Hejmo OP — after several years of efforts to obtain permission from the communist authorities. The first editor-in-chief was Marcin Babraj OP. From the outset, the magazine attracted prominent Polish authors such as Roman Brandstaetter, Fr. Józef Tischner, Anna Kamieńska, and Andrzej Kijowski, and it published works by "unruly" writers including Gustaw Herling-Grudziński despite censorship. It was a magazine for seekers and for those for whom faith was a conscious, thought-out choice, and it also addressed ecumenical issues. The publishing house, Wydawnictwo W drodze, grew alongside the magazine and today publishes books on theology, spirituality, psychology, and culture. Its catalogue includes works by figures such as Fulton J. Sheen, Frank J. Sheed, Thomas Aquinas, and Meg Meeker, as well as series like "Studia i Źródła Dominikańskiego Instytutu Historycznego w Krakowie" (Studies and Sources of the Dominican Historical Institute in Kraków), which publishes scholarly works on the history of the Dominican Order in Poland. The publisher also organizes workshops and events, such as the "Jak rozmawiać o wierze?" (How to talk about faith?) workshops. The monthly magazine has been available in digital formats since January 2012, when it became the third Polish periodical and the first Polish monthly available on Amazon Kindle. From January 2013 it was also available on iPad. Each issue is devoted to a specific theme and includes regular columns such as "Dominikanie na niedzielę" (Dominicans for Sunday), "Pytania w drodze" (Questions on the Way), and "Orientacje" (Orientations). Editors-in-chief have included Marcin Babraj OP (1973–1995), Paweł Kozacki OP (1995–2010), and Roman Bielecki OP (since June 2010). In October 2023 the magazine celebrated its 50th anniversary, having published 602 regular issues and 4 special issues. That same month it received the Totus Tuus award for 2023 in the media category, granted by the Fundacja "Dzieło Nowego Tysiąclecia", for building reasoned faith and shaping a thinking, critical society sensitive to others.

It also developed academic series, notably "Studia i Źródła Dominikańskiego Instytutu Historycznego w Krakowie" (Studies and Sources of the Dominican Historical Institute in Kraków), which publishes scholarly monographs on the history of the Dominican Order in Polish lands. The magazine itself underwent editorial changes: Paweł Kozacki OP served as editor-in-chief from 1995 to 2010, and was succeeded in June 2010 by Roman Bielecki OP. In January 2012, the monthly became available on Amazon Kindle, making it the third Polish periodical and the first Polish monthly in that format. From January 2013 it was also available on iPad. Each issue is devoted to a specific theme and includes regular columns such as "Dominikanie na niedzielę" (Dominicans for Sunday), "Pytania w drodze" (Questions on the Way), and "Orientacje" (Orientations). Over the years, columnists have included Grzegorz Górny, Jarosław Makowski, Małgorzata Musierowicz, Jan Góra OP, Dariusz Kowalczyk SJ, Marek Magierowski, Tessa Capponi-Borawska, Konrad Kruczkowski, and Dariusz Rosiak; current columnists include Paulina Wilk, Fr. Grzegorz Strzelczyk, Jarosław Mikołajewski, Paweł Krupa OP, and Stefan Szczepłek. Authors published in the monthly include Jacek Salij OP, Jan Góra OP, and Michał Zioło OCSO. In October 2023, the monthly celebrated its 50th anniversary, having published 602 regular issues and 4 special issues. That same month, the Fundacja "Dzieło Nowego Tysiąclecia" awarded W drodze the Totus Tuus award for 2023 in the category "TOTUS TUUS medialny im. bpa Jana Chrapka". The jury justified the award for building reasoned faith and shaping a society that is thinking, critical of reality, yet sensitive to other people and their often complicated situations. The publishing house continues to release new books and organize events, such as the "Jak rozmawiać o wierze?" workshops, whose 5th edition is scheduled for 9–10 October 2026.
