Overview

The WAP Forum was an industry consortium founded in 1997 by Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia and Unwired Planet to create global standards for delivering internet-like services to mobile phones and other devices with limited processing power, memory, display, keyboard and internet access speed. It published several versions of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) specifications, beginning with WAP 1.0 in May 1998 and culminating in WAP 2.0 in July 2001. In June 2002 the WAP Forum merged with several similarly focused organizations to form the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), which continued and broadened the standardization work. The WAP Forum is now defunct as a separate entity; its website redirects to the OMA home page.

History

The WAP Forum was established in 1997 as a consortium of companies aiming to standardize the provision of internet services similar to the World Wide Web for users of mobile phones and similar devices with limited performance, memory, display, keyboard and internet access speed. In June 1997, Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia and Unwired Planet agreed on the need to create standards for advanced services for mobile phones. In September 1997 the WAP architecture was published. In January 1998, WAP Forum Ltd. was officially formed. In May 1998, WAP version 1.0 was published, followed by WAP 1.1 in June 1999. In December 1999, WAP version 1.2 was approved, including functionality such as WAP Push. In June 2000, WAP version 1.2.1 was approved. In July 2001, WAP version 2.0 was published. In June 2002, the activities of the WAP Forum were transferred to the Open Mobile Alliance, which was formed by merging the WAP Forum with several other similar institutions to broaden the scope of standardization.
