Overview

Wargaming Helsinki was a Finnish video game developer based in Helsinki. It was originally founded in 2012 under the name Boomlagoon by former employees of Rovio Entertainment, the company behind Angry Birds. As Boomlagoon, the studio focused on mobile games and built a small portfolio of titles for smartphones and tablets. In December 2016, the studio was acquired by Wargaming.net, the Cyprus-headquartered publisher best known for the free-to-play military franchise World of Tanks, World of Warships and World of Warplanes. Following the acquisition, the company was renamed Wargaming Helsinki and became part of the Wargaming group of development studios, which includes offices in several countries. The Helsinki studio operated as a subsidiary of Wargaming.net and contributed to the group's mobile and online game efforts. However, the studio's life under Wargaming was relatively short: in 2019 the company was shut down, and its operations were discontinued. Wargaming Helsinki is therefore classified as a defunct developer brand, remembered mainly as a Finnish mobile game startup that was absorbed into a larger international publisher. The Boomlagoon name and website have since been repurposed. The domain boomlagoon.com now hosts a World of Warcraft fan and guide site run by Richard Barnett, which is unrelated to the original game development studio. This dossier concerns the commercial game developer entity, not the current content site.

History

Wargaming Helsinki was established in 2012 in Helsinki, Finland, under the name Boomlagoon. The founding team consisted of former employees of Rovio Entertainment, the Finnish company famous for the Angry Birds franchise. Like many Finnish game startups of that era, Boomlagoon aimed to create mobile games for the rapidly growing smartphone and tablet market. As Boomlagoon, the studio developed and released mobile titles and sought to establish itself in the competitive free-to-play and premium mobile game space. The company remained independent for several years, building its own brand and portfolio. In December 2016, Boomlagoon was acquired by Wargaming.net, the publisher and developer group known for World of Tanks, World of Warships and World of Warplanes. The acquisition was part of Wargaming's broader strategy of expanding its development capacity and mobile presence through studio acquisitions in Europe and elsewhere. After the deal closed, the Finnish studio was renamed Wargaming Helsinki and integrated into the Wargaming group as a subsidiary development studio. Under the Wargaming Helsinki name, the studio operated as part of the international Wargaming network, which includes studios in multiple countries. However, the Helsinki operation did not last long within the group. In 2019, Wargaming shut down the studio, ending its activities. The closure reflected consolidation within the group and the challenging economics of maintaining multiple development locations. After the shutdown, the Boomlagoon brand and domain were no longer used for game development. The boomlagoon.com website was later repurposed as a World of Warcraft fan and guide site operated by Richard Barnett, offering raid guides, PvP boosting information and articles about Azeroth. This current website is not connected to the original Finnish game developer, and the Wargaming Helsinki entity itself is defunct.
