Overview

WeRide is an autonomous-driving technology company founded in 2017 by Tony Han, a former chief scientist of Baidu's autonomous-driving unit. The company develops Level 4 automated-driving systems and vehicle products for passenger mobility, public transport, logistics, sanitation, and related commercial applications. Its principal offerings include robotaxis, autonomous minibuses and robobuses, autonomous vans, sensor systems, and autonomous sanitation vehicles. The company originated in Silicon Valley and is headquartered in Guangzhou, with additional offices and operations reported in San Jose, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. WeRide has pursued an international deployment strategy rather than limiting its technology to a single domestic market. Its vehicles and pilot services have been deployed in more than 60 cities across 13 countries, while the company has obtained or participated in driverless-testing and operating programs in China, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Switzerland, Singapore, and France. WeRide's early commercial emphasis was robotaxi service. In its first year of robotaxi operations, the company reported completing more than 147,000 trips for over 60,000 passengers. It subsequently broadened its portfolio to include the Mini Robobus, the Robovan cargo platform, autonomous driving sensor suites, and the Robosweeper S1 sanitation vehicle. These products reflect a business model centered on supplying complete autonomous-driving solutions and services to transport operators, vehicle manufacturers, logistics companies, municipalities, and platform partners. Strategic partnerships have been important to WeRide's expansion. The company has worked with vehicle and industrial groups including Renault Group, Bosch, GAC Group, Yutong, and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. In Singapore it worked with Strides, a subsidiary of public-transport operator SMRT Corporation, and with Chye Thiam Maintenance on autonomous sanitation applications. In the United Arab Emirates it partnered with Bayanat and later with Uber to make selected autonomous vehicles available through the Uber platform. These relationships support vehicle integration, regulatory access, fleet deployment, and commercial service delivery. Regulatory approvals have also been a major turning point. WeRide obtained a driverless-testing permit in California in 2021, received the UAE's first approved national license for self-driving vehicles on public roads in 2023, and secured Singapore licenses covering autonomous-vehicle testing on public roads and public paths. In 2025, it participated in an autonomous-mobility project supported by the Canton of Zurich and Swiss Federal Railways, and announced a fully driverless European robobus shuttle project in France. WeRide pursued public-market financing during the expansion of the autonomous-driving sector. It filed for a Nasdaq initial public offering in 2024 and subsequently traded under the symbol WRD. The listing made WeRide one of the first publicly traded companies focused broadly on autonomous driving and one of the earliest publicly listed robotaxi companies. By 2025, the company reported a workforce of more than 2,000 employees. Its current strategic direction combines autonomous vehicle technology, fleet operations, software and sensor products, and partnerships intended to move L4 driving from testing toward regulated commercial deployment.

History

WeRide was established in 2017 by Tony Han, who had previously served as chief scientist of Baidu's autonomous-driving unit. Although the company was founded in Silicon Valley, Guangzhou became its headquarters and a central base for research, engineering, and operations. From the outset, WeRide focused on L4 automation, a level at which vehicles can perform the complete driving task within defined operational conditions without requiring a human to continuously control the vehicle. The company's first major commercial application was the robotaxi. By November 2020, WeRide said that its first year of robotaxi operations had produced more than 147,000 passenger trips involving over 60,000 people. In January 2021, it introduced the Mini Robobus, extending its technology from on-demand taxi service to scheduled or semi-scheduled shuttle transportation. In April of the same year, it obtained a permit for driverless testing in California, an important step in its international regulatory program. WeRide expanded beyond passenger mobility in September 2021 with the Robovan, an autonomous cargo-van concept intended for freight and logistics use. In December 2021, it completed an autonomous taxi trial on Yas Island in the United Arab Emirates in partnership with Bayanat. The UAE subsequently became one of the company's most significant overseas markets. WeRide also developed relationships with vehicle manufacturers and industrial technology companies. Its partnership with Bosch, announced in 2022, covered advanced driver-assistance software, while cooperation with GAC Group, Yutong, and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance connected the company to vehicle platforms, manufacturing, and mobility deployment. Singapore became another important test market. WeRide began operations there in 2022 and later reached an arrangement with Strides, a subsidiary of SMRT Corporation. In December 2023, Singapore's Land Transport Authority granted WeRide licenses covering autonomous-vehicle testing on public roads and public paths. During 2023, WeRide also received the UAE's first approved national license for self-driving vehicles on public roads, strengthening its ability to move from controlled trials toward regulated services. The company continued broadening its product portfolio in 2023 and 2024. At CES 2023 it introduced Sensor Suite 5.1, a new generation of autonomous-driving sensing hardware and software. In April 2024 it launched the Robosweeper S1, applying automated driving to municipal sanitation. In May, WeRide announced a partnership with Renault Group, and in June it worked with Singapore sanitation company Chye Thiam Maintenance to advance Robosweeper deployment in Singapore. That month it also announced a strategic partnership with Uber, initially allowing selected WeRide vehicles in Abu Dhabi to be requested through the Uber application. WeRide pursued a public listing as autonomous-driving companies sought additional capital and greater international visibility. It filed for a Nasdaq initial public offering in 2024 and later traded under the symbol WRD. The transaction positioned it among the earliest publicly listed companies whose core business covered a broad autonomous-driving portfolio, including robotaxis. By 2025, WeRide reported more than 2,000 employees and operations or deployments spanning dozens of cities and multiple continents. In early 2025, WeRide introduced the Robovan W5 and announced a European fully driverless robobus shuttle project in France with beti, Renault Group, and Macif. It also launched the GXR robotaxi model in Beijing and participated in a Swiss autonomous-mobility project backed by the Canton of Zurich and Swiss Federal Railways. These developments illustrate WeRide's continuing shift from technology demonstrations toward commercial fleets, public-transport integration, logistics, sanitation, and geographically diverse autonomous services.
