Overview

Werre Park (German: Werre-Park) is a shopping center located in the spa town of Bad Oeynhausen in the Minden-Lübbecke district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It sits on the southern bank of the Werre river, about two kilometers east of the town center in the direction of the Weser. The center was built on the site of the former Weserhütte industrial works, which went bankrupt in 1987, and opened on 1 April 1998. The project developer was BAUWERT Investment Group, and the center is operated by ECE Group. The center has a total rental area of 52,000 square meters, which includes medical practices, and a retail area of 30,000 square meters arranged on a single level along a 360-meter-long glass-roofed shopping passage. It houses around 80 specialty shops. Anchor tenants include H&M, C&A, OBI, MediaMarkt (formerly Saturn), TeddyToys, and an Edeka supermarket. The complex also includes the UCI-Kinowelt Bad Oeynhausen cinema and two casinos. At its opening, a Globus self-service department store was the largest anchor tenant; this space was later divided several times, and the Globus Group also operated an Alphatecc electronics market. The center offers approximately 2,300 free outdoor parking spaces spread over four parking areas, as well as around 2,400 free parking spaces according to the center's own information. It is accessible from the A30 motorway via the Bad Oeynhausen-Ost junction (34). Public transport connections include city bus lines BO4, BO5, BO7, and BO8 from Bad Oeynhausen's central bus station on weekdays, and only line BO8 on Saturdays, with a travel time of about four minutes. Werre Park provides a range of services including a lending service for wheelchairs and electric scooters, a KidCar rental for younger guests, a pharmacy, medical center, car wash, baby changing room, barrier-free toilets and parking, lockers, ATM, and a gas station. Entertainment options include a casino and a discotheque. The center also emphasizes accessibility, offering rollator rental, electric scooter rental, wheelchair rental, barrier-free parking, and barrier-free toilets. The current center manager is Kim Johanna Voges. The center runs regular promotions, events, and a gift card program valid in many shops.

History

Werre Park was built on the site of the Weserhütte, an industrial company that went bankrupt in 1987. The location was chosen because of the availability of the former industrial land in a traffic-favorable position directly on Mindener Straße. The shopping center opened on 1 April 1998. The project developer was BAUWERT Investment Group, and the operator is ECE Group. At its opening, a Globus self-service department store (Globus-SB-Warenhaus) was the largest anchor tenant by sales area. This space was later divided several times. The Globus Group also operated an Alphatecc electronics market at the center. Over time, the tenant mix evolved. Current anchor tenants include H&M, C&A, OBI, MediaMarkt (which replaced Saturn), TeddyToys, and an Edeka supermarket. The center also includes the UCI-Kinowelt Bad Oeynhausen cinema and two casinos. The center has approximately 80 shops along a 360-meter glass-roofed shopping passage. The total rental area is 52,000 square meters, including medical practices, with a retail area of 30,000 square meters on one level. The center offers around 2,300 free outdoor parking spaces in four areas, and according to the center's own information, around 2,400 free parking spaces. In terms of transport, the center is accessible from the A30 motorway via the Bad Oeynhausen-Ost junction (34). After completion of the Bad Oeynhausen north bypass, the downgrading of the currently four-lane Mindener Straße is planned. Public transport connections include city bus lines BO4, BO5, BO7, and BO8 from the central bus station on weekdays, and only line BO8 on Saturdays, with a travel time of about four minutes. The center has been the subject of academic study, including a 2003 publication by Kathrin Meier examining the perspectives of shopping centers between basic supply and experiential consumption, using Werre Park as a case study.
