Overview

Weser Label is a German independent record label based in Bremen, founded in October 1982 by Claus Fabian, who was also the drummer of ZK, the predecessor band of Die Toten Hosen. The label began as a formal distribution vehicle for the self-released debut record of the German punk band Die Mimmi's, but quickly grew into a platform for other punk and rock acts. Over the decades, Weser Label has released records by artists such as Die Suurbiers, Die Goldenen Zitronen, Rocko Schamoni, The Busters, Bela B, Wiglaf Droste, The Lurkers, Der böse Bub Eugen, Heiter bis Wolkig, and Abstürzende Brieftauben. In the mid-1980s the label faced bankruptcy, but was saved financially when Die Goldenen Zitronen's 1986 single "Am Tag, als Thomas Anders starb" became a commercial success after coverage in Bravo and Bild. In 1999, a sub-label called Superrock Records was founded, focusing on rock music. The label remains active and is owned by Claus Fabian. In 2023, Weser Label and Superrock Records celebrated their 40+1 anniversary with a concert at the Kulturzentrum Lagerhaus in Bremen, which also marked the farewell stage performance of Elli von Echoschleife and a reunion of Die Mimmis' 1986–1990 lineup.

History

Weser Label was founded in October 1982 in Bremen by Claus Fabian, who had previously been the drummer for ZK, the predecessor band of Die Toten Hosen. The label was initially established as a formal entity to distribute the self-released record of the punk band Die Mimmi's, which had grown out of the band Slipeinlage, formed in April 1982 by Fabian and Elli von Echoschleife. The label's name provided a business identity for the DIY distribution efforts. As the label grew, other punk bands such as Die Suurbiers and Die Goldenen Zitronen began releasing their records through Fabian's label. Over the years, Weser Label expanded its roster to include a diverse range of rock and punk artists, including Rocko Schamoni, The Busters, Bela B, Wiglaf Droste, The Lurkers, Der böse Bub Eugen, Heiter bis Wolkig, and Abstürzende Brieftauben. In the mid-1980s, the label faced financial difficulties and was on the verge of bankruptcy. However, in 1986, Die Goldenen Zitronen released the song "Am Tag, als Thomas Anders starb" ("On the Day Thomas Anders Died"), a satirical song about the pop singer Thomas Anders. The song attracted attention from the youth magazine Bravo and the tabloid Bild, leading to significant sales and restoring the label's financial health. In 1999, Weser Label founded a sub-label called Superrock Records, which focused on rock music. The label has remained active into the 2020s, and in 2023 it celebrated its 40+1 anniversary (delayed by the pandemic) with a concert at the Kulturzentrum Lagerhaus in Bremen. The event featured a reunion of Die Mimmis' 1986–1990 lineup and marked the final live performance of Elli von Echoschleife. Claus Fabian continues to own and operate the label.
