Overview

Wikitoki is a laboratory of collaborative practices and social innovation based in the San Francisco neighbourhood of Bilbao, in the Basque Country, Spain. It was constituted as an association in 2013 and describes itself as an open community of professionals who develop projects aimed at transforming the lives of people and other species, their relationships, and the environments they inhabit. Rather than a conventional company, Wikitoki operates as a meeting place and community of practice that seeks dialogue and the hybridisation of agents and disciplines in order to address complex challenges and transitions. The community brings together diverse agents from fields such as architecture, urbanism, contextual arts, cultural mediation, free technologies, social ecology and transmedia communication. Each agent keeps their own identity while working within a shared community of practice that has favoured collaborative ways of working since 2014, combining autonomy and interdependence under a common framework. What unites the members is their way of doing things, with the prefix "CO-" as a common link — collective, collaborative, cooperative, communitarian — and an experimental and transformative spirit. Wikitoki organises its activity around three complementary strategic lines. WikiLAB is its laboratory of co-creation and collaborative practices, functioning as its R&D&I unit and a space for ideation, experimentation and prototyping, operating as a learning community and community of practice that systematises and shares knowledge in a free and open innovation key. WikiKOOP is Wikitoki's portfolio of services for developing projects with clients who also seek to facilitate positive change, combining the skills and knowledge of community members and nourished by participation and co-creation, facilitation and accompaniment, community culture, feminisms, ecology, solidarity, and transformative economy or citizen innovation. WikiSARE is the network of affinity, representation and collective dialogue that allows the community to open up, diversify and engage in dialogue. The physical headquarters of Wikitoki is located in the Auzo Factory La Cantera space in the San Francisco neighbourhood of Bilbao. The project considers its physical, digital and networked space as common resources that facilitate encounter and connection between diverse agents, with the intention of interacting and generating synergies with the social, economic and cultural context of the neighbourhood. Wikitoki is a reference space in social innovation and transformative economy, seeking to integrate into its operation the logics of feminist economics, the commons, the social and solidarity economy, and P2P practices. Its assembly-based and self-managed structure promotes active participation through community dedication and collaboration with other entities in its environment. From 2013 to 2018 it operated with an assembly-based governance model; subsequently it developed its own governance model, called Wikikrazia, based on sociocracy. Wikitoki has received recognition including the 2015 Elkarlan Prize from the Department of Public Administration and Justice of the Basque Government, and was a finalist for the 2018 Hans Sauer Prize "Designing Futures. Social Laboratories in Europe".

History

Wikitoki was constituted as an association in 2013. Its purpose is to experiment with new forms of relationship, organisation, research, creation, production and consumption, articulating itself as a space for co-creation and a community of learning. The project emerged in the San Francisco neighbourhood of Bilbao, where it established its physical headquarters in the Auzo Factory La Cantera space. The community of Wikitoki is made up of diverse agents from fields such as architecture, urbanism, contextual arts, cultural mediation, free technologies, social ecology and transmedia communication. Each agent maintains their own identity but works in a community of practice that has favoured collaborative practices since 2014, combining autonomy and interdependence under a common framework. The project considers its physical, digital and networked space as common resources that facilitate encounter and connection between diverse agents, with the intention of interacting and generating synergies with the social, economic and cultural context of the neighbourhood. From 2013 to 2018, Wikitoki operated with an assembly-based governance model. Subsequently, it developed its own governance model, called Wikikrazia, based on sociocracy. Wikitoki is a reference space in social innovation and transformative economy, seeking to integrate into its operation the logics of feminist economics, the commons, the social and solidarity economy, and P2P practices. Its assembly-based and self-managed structure promotes active participation through community dedication and collaboration with other entities in the environment. Wikitoki organises its work around three complementary strategic lines of reflection and work. WikiLAB is the laboratory of co-creation and collaborative practices, its R&D&I unit and space for ideation, experimentation and prototyping, operating as a learning community and community of practice that researches from collective intelligence, the mix of diverse knowledge and applied creativity, and systematises and shares the knowledge generated in free and open innovation keys so that it is easily usable and adaptable both within the Wikitoki community and externally. WikiKOOP is Wikitoki's portfolio of services for developing projects with clients who also seek to facilitate positive change with their actions, combining the skills and knowledge of community members, nourished by participation and co-creation, facilitation and accompaniment, community culture, feminisms, ecology, solidarity, and transformative economy or citizen innovation. WikiSARE is the network of affinity, representation and collective dialogue that allows the community to open up, diversify and engage in dialogue. In terms of recognition, Wikitoki received the 2015 Elkarlan Prize from the Department of Public Administration and Justice of the Basque Government, and was a finalist for the 2018 Hans Sauer Prize "Designing Futures. Social Laboratories in Europe".
