Overview

WORA-TV is a full-power television station serving Puerto Rico from Mayagüez, on the island’s western coast. The station broadcasts on virtual channel 5 and is currently affiliated with the American Broadcasting Company, using the consumer-facing brands ABC Puerto Rico and ABC 5. Its signal and related translators extend coverage beyond western Puerto Rico, including the San Juan metropolitan area and other parts of the island. WRFB channel 5 in Carolina operates as a full-time satellite, while additional translator facilities broaden the reach of the station and its multicast services. Founded in 1955 by Alfredo Ramírez de Arellano y Bártoli, WORA-TV was the first television station established on Puerto Rico’s west coast and the island’s third television station overall, following WKAQ-TV and WAPA-TV. It took its call sign from the WORA radio operation, which was associated with the station during its formative years. In its early period, WORA-TV produced local programming as an independent station. Over time, however, local production declined and the schedule reportedly became more reliant on infomercials, in part because of limited local advertising demand for television. The station’s affiliation history reflects the consolidation and restructuring of Puerto Rico’s television market. In 1969, WORA-TV became a repeater for WRIK-TV. In 1979, it entered an affiliation arrangement with San Juan-based WAPA-TV, ending its period as a locally operated independent outlet. The station later switched to WKAQ-TV in 1985 and to WLII in 1995. These arrangements connected the western market to the economically stronger television operations based in San Juan and helped reduce the separation between regional television markets across the island. WORA-TV became an ABC affiliate on November 1, 2014, initially carrying the network on a digital subchannel branded ABC 5. The station subsequently resumed a semi-satellite relationship with WKAQ-TV in January 2015, while Univision programming moved to WOLE-DT. During this period, WORA carried programming associated with several national and international services on its digital multiplex. Its third subchannel introduced Vive programming in 2015, later replacing that service with a simulcast of Televisión Española’s 24H news channel in 2019. A major transition occurred between 2019 and 2020. WORA-TV announced that its WKAQ-TV relationship would end by December 31, 2019. On January 1, 2020, ABC programming moved to the station’s primary channel, restoring ABC as the principal service associated with WORA-TV. The change also ended the station’s role as a western Puerto Rican outlet for Telemundo programming. In June 2019, the station closed its news department and laid off 19 employees after the end of the WKAQ rebroadcast arrangement. Its former regional news segments had focused on Mayagüez and Puerto Rico’s western region and had been carried within WKAQ-TV’s Telenoticias schedule. WORA-TV later rebuilt its local news presence. On April 14, 2021, it announced ABC News Extra, a Spanish-language weeknight newscast at 7 p.m., marking the return of a regional news operation after almost two years without one. The station also produces or has produced Spanish-language local programs including Directo y Sin Filtro, Primetime, De Show con Gricel, Fan Zone, La Gran Entrevista, Veronique, Turismo con Perea, and other community, interview, entertainment, and cultural programs. The station’s digital portfolio has also included Telecinco, launched on subchannel 5.4 in December 2020. Telecinco combined programming such as news from RT and horse-racing coverage from Hipódromo Camarero. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, WORA-TV removed RT programming from the service in March 2022 and replaced it with programming from Deutsche Welle. WORA-TV therefore operates not only as an ABC affiliate but also as a regional broadcast platform with local Spanish-language programming, satellite coverage, translators, and multiple digital services.

History

WORA-TV began broadcasting in 1955 under the founding direction of Alfredo Ramírez de Arellano y Bártoli. It was the first television station on Puerto Rico’s western coast and the third station established on the island. Its call letters were connected to the WORA radio operation, which formed part of the station’s early media context. The station initially produced local programming as an independent broadcaster, but its locally originated schedule later contracted and reportedly relied more heavily on infomercials. In 1969, WORA-TV became a repeater for WRIK-TV. A decade later it entered an affiliation arrangement with WAPA-TV, ending its period as a locally run independent station. The arrangement reflected the increasing importance of San Juan-based broadcasters and helped connect western Puerto Rico to stronger islandwide television networks. WORA-TV switched to WKAQ-TV in 1985 and then entered an affiliation arrangement with WLII beginning January 1, 1995. The station returned to the center of Puerto Rico’s affiliation changes in the 2010s. In 2014, it announced that it would become an ABC affiliate, initially carrying the network through a digital subchannel branded ABC 5. On January 1, 2015, it resumed a semi-satellite relationship with WKAQ-TV, while Univision programming moved to WOLE-DT. Its digital services also evolved during this period: Vive was added in 2015 and later replaced by a 24H news simulcast from Televisión Española in 2019. In June 2019, WORA-TV announced that its WKAQ-TV affiliation would end by December 31. The change had an immediate effect on the station’s local news operation. On June 28, 2019, WORA-TV laid off 19 employees and closed its news department. The former WORA-TV Noticias operation had supplied short Spanish-language regional segments focused on Mayagüez and western Puerto Rico within WKAQ-TV’s Telenoticias broadcasts. The station’s new configuration took effect on January 1, 2020, when ABC programming moved to the main channel. WORA-TV thereby became a principal ABC outlet rather than primarily a rebroadcaster of WKAQ-TV programming. In December 2020, the station and its satellite and translator facilities launched Telecinco on subchannel 5.4. The service combined news content from RT with horse racing from Hipódromo Camarero. RT programming was removed in March 2022 and replaced by Deutsche Welle content after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Local news production returned in 2021. WORA-TV introduced ABC News Extra, a Spanish-language weeknight newscast at 7 p.m., anchored at launch by Veronique Abreu Tañon and Yarimar Marrero. The station also maintains a broader local-programming identity through Spanish-language interview, entertainment, cultural, sports, and community programs. Among the programs associated with the station are Directo y Sin Filtro, Primetime, De Show con Gricel, Fan Zone, La Gran Entrevista, Veronique, Turismo con Perea, and Por las Fiestas de mi Pueblo. WORA-TV completed the United States digital television transition for its full-power signal in 2009. Its analog VHF channel 5 service ended on June 12, 2009, while the digital signal continued on UHF channel 29 using virtual channel 5. Under the federal SAFER Act, the analog signal remained temporarily active through June 26 to provide public-service information about the transition. Today, WORA-TV’s service area is supported by WRFB in Carolina and translators in Fajardo, Mayagüez, Ponce, and San Lorenzo.
