Overview

XPeng, formally Guangzhou Xiaopeng Motors Technology Co., Ltd., is a Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturer that presents itself as a global artificial-intelligence mobility company. Its principal business is the development, manufacture and sale of smart electric passenger vehicles, supported by internally developed software, advanced driver-assistance systems, vehicle electronics, powertrain technologies and charging infrastructure. The company is headquartered in Guangzhou, Guangdong, and has maintained international offices including locations in Mountain View, California, and Munich, Germany. XPeng was founded in 2014 by Xia Heng and He Tao, former GAC Group executives whose backgrounds were in automotive engineering and research and development. The company attracted early support from technology and investment figures, including He Xiaopeng, the founder of UCWeb and a former Alibaba executive, as well as Xiaomi founder Lei Jun. Alibaba, Foxconn and IDG Capital were among its prominent early investors. He Xiaopeng became the company's chairman and a central public representative of the brand. The company's first production vehicle was the G3 compact electric sport-utility vehicle, which entered production in November 2018 and was launched publicly at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in December that year. XPeng followed it with the P7 electric sedan, unveiled at Auto Shanghai in April 2019 and delivered from June 2020. The P7 became an important expression of the brand's strategy of combining long-range electric propulsion with software-led features and driver assistance. Later vehicles expanded the range into sedans and sport-utility vehicles, including the P5, G9, G6, P7+ and G7. Smart driving has been a defining part of XPeng's positioning. Its XPILOT systems combine cameras, radar and, in some vehicle generations, lidar to support functions such as highway assistance, parking and navigation-assisted driving. The P5, introduced in 2021, was described as the first production vehicle equipped with lidar-based advanced driver assistance in its market. From the P7+ generation, XPeng also pursued a vision-focused sensor strategy using cameras and 4D millimeter-wave radar rather than lidar. The company has continued to develop in-house software, computing hardware and data systems, including its Turing AI chip, unveiled in 2025 for driver assistance and in-cabin artificial-intelligence applications. XPeng became publicly traded in the United States through a New York Stock Exchange initial public offering in August 2020 and also trades in Hong Kong. Its international expansion began with exports of the P7 to Norway in 2021. Europe subsequently became a major overseas focus, with distributor and market-entry agreements covering countries including Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom. The company's international proposition combines vehicle sales with charging access and localized distribution. The company has also broadened its ambitions beyond conventional electric cars. Its technology activities include charging, intelligent cockpits, autonomous-driving research, robotaxi development, humanoid robotics and the flying-vehicle program operated through XPeng AeroHT. In 2023, XPeng agreed to acquire DiDi's autonomous-driving technology business in a share-based transaction. In the same year, Volkswagen Group agreed to invest in XPeng and collaborate on electric models for China. Subsequent agreements expanded the relationship into vehicle platforms, software, electronic and electrical architecture, procurement and charging-network interoperability. XPeng's brand positioning is therefore built around relatively premium smart electric vehicles, software-defined transportation and the integration of artificial intelligence into mobility products. It competes in China's crowded new-energy vehicle market while seeking a broader international role as an automotive technology supplier and mobility platform company. Its long-term strategy includes using its software, electronic architecture and AI capabilities in its own vehicles and, through partnerships, potentially in products made by other automakers.

History

XPeng was established in August 2014 by Xia Heng and He Tao, two former GAC Group executives with automotive technology and research backgrounds. The company was conceived during the early expansion of China's new-energy vehicle sector, when software, connectivity and autonomous-driving research were becoming increasingly important differentiators. He Xiaopeng, a technology entrepreneur associated with UCWeb and Alibaba, became an early financial backer, chairman and namesake of the company. Xiaomi founder Lei Jun also supported the venture, while Alibaba, Foxconn and IDG Capital were among its notable investors. A 2018 funding round brought Alibaba vice-chairman Joseph Tsai onto the company's board. XPeng's first vehicle, the G3 electric SUV, entered production in November 2018 and was publicly launched at CES in December of that year. The vehicle established the company's initial product formula: a battery-electric platform combined with a connected cockpit and software-based driver assistance. In 2019, the company introduced the P7 sedan at Auto Shanghai. It also established a Guangzhou vehicle-hire operation using its own cars, reflecting an early interest in mobility services as well as vehicle sales. The P7 began customer deliveries in June 2020. The company pursued overseas autonomous-vehicle testing while developing its production portfolio. XMotors.ai received a California testing permit in September 2018, but the permit was revoked in February 2020 after the subsidiary did not submit a required disengagement report. California granted a renewed permit in March 2020. XPeng then completed a series of fundraising transactions, including investments associated with Xiaomi, Alibaba, Qatar Investment Authority, Mubadala, Coatue, Hillhouse Capital and Sequoia Capital China. In August 2020, it raised capital through an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange. XPeng later became listed in Hong Kong as well. Product development accelerated in the early 2020s. The P5 sedan entered the market in 2021 and became notable for being the first production XPeng vehicle equipped with lidar for advanced driver assistance. The company also introduced lithium-iron-phosphate battery variants alongside nickel-manganese-cobalt configurations. Norway became XPeng's first overseas export market for the P7 in 2021, marking the beginning of the company's broader European expansion. XPeng's charging strategy developed in parallel, combining proprietary fast-charging stations with access to third-party infrastructure. XPeng expanded its ambitions into aerial mobility through HT Aero, later known as XPeng AeroHT. In 2021, the subsidiary announced a major funding round and a flying-car design. The project subsequently became associated with the Land Aircraft Carrier concept, a road vehicle designed to carry and deploy a separate short-range aircraft. XPeng also continued to invest in software and semiconductor capabilities. It began assembling an internal chip team around 2020 and later worked with external integration partners before announcing successful tape-out of its Turing chip in 2024. The 2023 Shanghai Auto Show saw the unveiling of the G6 electric SUV. That year also brought two strategically important transactions. XPeng agreed to acquire DiDi's autonomous-driving technology unit in exchange for XPeng shares, adding technology and personnel while linking the transaction to future mobility products. Volkswagen Group separately announced a substantial investment in XPeng and plans to cooperate on two Volkswagen-branded electric models for China. Agreements signed in 2024 broadened that relationship to vehicle platforms, software, procurement and electronic/electrical architecture. The architecture was intended for Volkswagen's Chinese-market electric vehicles and later discussions expanded its possible use across additional powertrain types. During 2024 and 2025, XPeng continued to extend its European sales presence through local partners. It announced operations in Spain and Portugal with the G6, G9 and P7, and entered the United Kingdom through International Motors with a right-hand-drive G6. The company also broadened its technical identity. The P7+ represented a move toward a vision-focused driver-assistance sensor configuration using cameras and 4D millimeter-wave radar rather than lidar. XPeng launched the Turing AI chip in the G7 in 2025 and signaled that the chip could eventually be supplied to other automakers, including through its Volkswagen relationship. At its AI Day events, XPeng described a strategic shift toward embodied intelligence, encompassing vehicles, robotaxis, humanoid robots and flying vehicles. Iron, its humanoid robot, was unveiled in 2024 and demonstrated the company's attempt to apply AI, perception and motion-control expertise outside the passenger-car business. XPeng has also described VLA 2.0, robotaxi development and continued AeroHT work as parts of a broader mobility technology strategy. Consequently, XPeng is no longer positioned solely as a Chinese electric-car marque: it is also attempting to become a supplier and developer of software, computing, electronic architecture and intelligent-mobility systems for a wider automotive ecosystem.
