Overview

YASDA PRECISION TOOLS K.K. (安田工業株式会社) is a Japanese machine-tool manufacturer headquartered in Satoshō, Okayama Prefecture, that develops, builds and sells ultra-high-precision "mother machines" — machining centers, jig borers and gear grinding machines. The company traces its origins to 1929, when Shinjiro Yasuda founded Strong Shokai in Osaka and produced Japan's first automotive cylinder boring work and pistons. It was reorganized as a joint-stock company in 1939, renamed Yasuda Kogyo Co., Ltd. in 1944 when the plant was relocated to Kasaoka, Okayama under wartime dispersal, and resumed cylinder boring machine production after the war. From the 1960s onward YASDA moved up the precision ladder: it joined the Japan Machine Tool Builders' Association in 1960, developed the Jigmaster horizontal precision boring and milling machine in 1964 and its first machining center, the Precision Center, in 1966. Its YBM-series vertical, horizontal and 5-axis machining centers, H-series horizontal 5-axis machines, PX and Micro Center micro-machining lines, and CNC gear form grinding machines are sold to mold-and-die, automotive, semiconductor, optical and precision-component manufacturers. The company markets itself around a "pursuit of 1 µm" philosophy and a 3D Real Translation System that aims to make high-quality cutting and prototyping accessible. YASDA remains a privately held, family-influenced company. Leadership passed from founder Shinjiro Yasuda to Yukihiko Yasuda, who became president in 1976 and later chairman, and in 2009 to Takuto Yasuda as representative director and president. The firm has licensed machining-center manufacturing technology to partners in Romania, Hungary, the United Kingdom, Spain and South Korea, and has expanded internationally with Yasda Asia (Shanghai) Machine Tool Trading Co., Ltd. (2008) and its Dongguan, Dalian and Chengdu offices, plus YASDA Europe GmbH in Germany (2024). It exhibits at major trade fairs such as JIMTOF.

History

YASDA PRECISION TOOLS K.K. began in 1929 when Shinjiro Yasuda founded Strong Shokai (ストロング商会) in Osaka, where the firm carried out Japan's first automotive cylinder boring work and manufactured various pistons. In 1938 it developed a cylinder boring machine and sleeve tools, and in 1939 the sole proprietorship was reorganized as Strong Shokai Co., Ltd. Full-scale production of the cylinder boring machine and sleeve tools began in 1940. In 1944, wartime compulsory dispersal forced the plant to move to Kasaoka, Okayama (now Kasaoka City), and the company was renamed Yasuda Kogyo Co., Ltd. (安田工業株式会社). Operations were suspended at the end of the war in 1945 and cylinder boring machine production resumed in 1946. The postwar decades brought steady technical ascent. YASDA joined the Japan Machine Tool Builders' Association in 1960. In 1961 an assembly plant was completed and an automatic honing machine was developed; in 1962 the company was designated a "Small and Medium Enterprise Rationalization Model Factory" by the Director-General of the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency, a designation it received six consecutive times. In 1962 part of the Sasayama plant (the main plant) began operation and a research facility for new product development was set up within the Tomioka plant. The horizontal precision boring and milling machine (Jigmaster) was developed in 1964, followed by the machining center (Precision Center) in 1966. The first and second phases of the Sasayama plant (now the main plant) were completed in 1968, and in 1969 the main plant moved to the former Sasayama plant in Satoshō, Okayama; jigs, tools and service operations were separated into Yasuda Technical Service within the Tomioka plant. Recognition and technology transfer followed. In 1970 Shinjiro Yasuda received the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Fifth Class, for boring machine technology development, and YASDA entered a technical tie-up with Sundstrand for spindle tool-holding mechanisms and tools. It won the Small and Medium Enterprise Research Center Award in 1971 and increased capital to ¥40.5 million in 1972. In 1976 Yukihiko Yasuda became president. In 1977 manufacturing technology for the YBM70N machining center was licensed to Romania; in 1978 the YPC45 machining center won the 8th Machine Industry Design Award from Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun. In 1980 the main plant and offices were expanded, manufacturing technology for the YBM90N was licensed to Hungary, and the YPC50V machining center was co-developed with Korea's Tongil Industry. In 1983 technology for the YPC30 was licensed to Bridgeport of the United Kingdom and the company received the Science and Technology Agency Director-General's Award; in 1986 technology for the YPC45H was also licensed to Bridgeport. A constant-temperature assembly plant was completed at headquarters in 1986, and in 1989, on its 60th anniversary, the company introduced a corporate identity. In the 1990s and 2000s YASDA deepened its precision infrastructure: a sheet-metal and painting integrated plant, an expanded constant-temperature assembly plant and a precision measurement room were added in 1991; Yukihiko Yasuda received the Medal with Yellow Ribbon in 1995 for inventing high-precision machining centers. The second headquarters plant was completed in 2000, and in 2001 technology for the H40 machining center was licensed to Kondia of Spain. The second plant's machine factory was completed in 2005, and in 2006 the company was selected by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry among the "300 Vibrant Small and Medium Manufacturing Enterprises." In 2007 Yukihiko Yasuda received the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Rosette, for developing and manufacturing ultra-high-precision machining centers, and the Jigmaster YBM50J-S was recognized with the Best Technical Award in the 9th Commendation of Historically Significant Machine Tools by the Nippon Institute of Technology's Industrial Technology Museum. International expansion accelerated: Yasda Asia (Shanghai) Machine Tool Trading Co., Ltd. was established in 2008; the third headquarters plant (an ultra-high-precision constant-temperature, constant-humidity assembly plant) was completed in 2009, when Takuto Yasuda became representative director and president and Yukihiko Yasuda became chairman. Dongguan (2011) and Dalian (2012) offices followed in China. Solar panels were installed on the third plant roof in 2013, and Yukihiko Yasuda retired as chairman to become advisor. The third plant was expanded and the second plant's second assembly and shipping buildings were completed in 2016; the fifth factory and showroom were completed in 2017. A Chengdu office opened in 2023, and YASDA Europe GmbH was established in 2024 as the local incorporation of the German sales office.
