Overview

Yorkshire Building Society is a UK building society that describes itself as owned by its members rather than shareholders. It offers savings accounts and mortgages, and provides an app for managing accounts. The Society traces its origins to 1864 in Huddersfield and was formed under the Yorkshire Building Society name in 1982 through the merger of the Huddersfield & Bradford and West Yorkshire Building Societies.

History

The Society's history page states that in 1864 the Huddersfield Equitable Permanent Benefit Building Society was established by three gentlemen who met each morning from 5am to 8am in a single room in Huddersfield. In 1866 the West Yorkshire Building Society was established at the Royal Hotel in Dewsbury with only two staff. In 1975 the Huddersfield and Bradford Building Societies merged, and in 1982 the Huddersfield & Bradford and West Yorkshire Building Societies merged, giving birth to the Yorkshire Building Society. In 1992 Yorkshire Building Society merged with the Haywards Heath Building Society, and in 1998 the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation was established.
