Overview

Yugabyte was founded in 2016 by three former Facebook engineers: Kannan Muthukkaruppan, Karthik Ranganathan, and Mikhail Bautin. In February 2016, the founders started building YugabyteDB, described as a global-scale distributed SQL database designed for cloud-native transactional applications. In July 2019, the company made its previously commercial features open source, launching YugabyteDB as a fully open-source RDBMS under the Apache 2.0 license. Its fully managed DBaaS, YugabyteDB Aeon (formerly YugabyteDB Managed), was introduced in 2021. YugabyteDB is available as open source software or in a range of database-as-a-service options, including YugabyteDB Aeon, YugabyteDB Anywhere, and YugabyteDB OSS.
