Overview

Zakonnost' (Russian: «Законность», 'The Legality') is a monthly peer-reviewed legal research and practice journal published by the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation. It is one of the longest-running legal periodicals in Russia, having been issued continuously since 1934, and it was known until 1992 as Sotsialisticheskaya Zakonnost' ('Socialist Legality'). The publication serves as a key professional and academic forum for Russian prosecutors, investigators, judges and legal scholars.

History

Zakonnost' was founded in 1934 under the title Sotsialisticheskaya Zakonnost' ('Socialist Legality'), as a monthly periodical of the Soviet prosecution service. It was published throughout the Soviet period and became a central professional and scholarly outlet for prosecutors, investigators and legal academics. The journal documented the work of the procuracy in supervising the implementation of laws and published materials on investigative and judicial practice, new legislation and its commentary. In 1992, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the journal was renamed Zakonnost' ('The Legality'), reflecting the new Russian legal order. Since then it has been published by the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation. The journal is included in the list of Russian scientific journals of the Higher Attestation Commission (VAK) of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, recommended for publishing the main scientific results of dissertations for the degrees of candidate and doctor of sciences. Its editor-in-chief is Nikolai Petrovich Zaikin, an Honored Lawyer of the Russian Federation, who has worked in the editorial office since 1983 and has held the post of editor-in-chief since 1992. The journal continues to publish peer-reviewed scientific and practical articles, official documents of the Prosecutor General's Office of a normative-legal character, and discussion pieces on current legal problems. Its official website, pressa-lex.ru, presents current issues and article abstracts.
