Overview

Zollpackhof is a historic restaurant and beer garden located at Elisabeth-Abegg-Straße 1 in Berlin, Germany, directly opposite the Federal Chancellery. According to its official website, it was already Berlin's first excursion restaurant in the 1700s and continues to serve guests today. The establishment is owned and operated by Berlin restaurateur Benjamin Groenewold, who took it over in 2005 and restored a piece of the capital's tradition. Between 2014 and 2016, the historic complex underwent a long renovation in collaboration with the Augustiner Brewery from Munich, with the architectural concept based on old building plans from the turn of the century. The venue combines a restaurant, a seasonal beer garden, and an Augustiner cellar. The restaurant opens daily from 12:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., with kitchen hours from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The beer garden operates from April to September, weather permitting, from 10:00 a.m. to around 9:00 p.m., offering beverages, pretzels, and Munich Weißwurst from 10:00 a.m. and kitchen service from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Augustiner cellar has a summer break and returns from October 5, opening Monday to Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. with kitchen hours until 9:30 p.m. The Zollpackhof's philosophy includes professionalism, friendly service, and an enthusiasm for Bavarian cosiness. It is described by Wikidata as a beer garden in Berlin, Germany.

History

The history of the Zollpackhof site reaches back to the late 17th century. According to the restaurant's official history page, it all began on 8 November 1685 with the "Edict of Potsdam," through which Elector Frederick William allowed Huguenots persecuted in France to start a new life in Prussia, offering religious tolerance, financial start-up aid, a 15-year tax exemption, and other incentives. The Zollpackhof itself, located opposite today's Federal Chancellery, was already Berlin's first excursion restaurant in the 1700s, serving guests for over 300 years of tradition. In 2005, the original Berlin restaurateur Benjamin Groenewold took over the establishment, giving a piece of tradition back to the capital. Between 2014 and 2016, the historic complex underwent a long renovation phase in cooperation with the Augustiner Brewery from Munich, and the overall architectural concept was based on old building plans from the turn of the century. The renovated Zollpackhof now shines in new splendour, combining a restaurant, a seasonal beer garden, and an Augustiner cellar. The venue continues to operate under Groenewold's ownership, with a philosophy centered on professional and friendly service and an enthusiasm for Bavarian cosiness.
