Zsolnay

Zsolnay is a porcelain manufactory established in 1853 by Miklós Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary. His son Vilmos Zsolnay joined ten years later and led the factory to worldwide recognition through innovative products shown at world fairs and international exhibitions. The company introduced Pyrogranit, a frost-resisting building material, in 1886, and in 1893 Vilmos Zsolnay introduced Eosin, an iridescent glazing technique named after the Greek goddess Eos. The factory has operated continuously for over 170 years, and its handpainted products are made in Pécs, Hungary.

The Zsolnay factory was established in 1853 by Miklós Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary. Ten years later, his son Vilmos Zsolnay joined the company and became its manager and director. He led the factory to worldwide recognition by demonstrating its innovative products at world fairs and international exhibitions. In 1886 Zsolnay introduced Pyrogranit, a frost-resisting building material; these ornamental ceramics were used on numerous buildings, especially during the Art Nouveau movement, including the Matthias Church, Parliament, and the Great Market Hall in Budapest. In 1893 Vilmos Zsolnay introduced Eosin, a rich, iridescent glazing technique named after the Greek goddess Eos, which became a trademark of Zsolnay and a favorite of art nouveau artists. The Zsolnay factory has been operating continuously for over 170 years and always remained true to its origins.
