Overview

Air Changan is a Chinese airline brand based primarily in Xi'an, Shaanxi, with a focus on domestic passenger air services. The name refers to Chang'an, the historical name associated with Xi'an, and reflects the brand's regional identity in northwest China. Established in 1992, the airline initially focused on air transport serving Shaanxi and the surrounding northwest region. Following changes in ownership and operating arrangements, the brand became part of the HNA aviation system and has used Xi'an Xianyang International Airport and other airports as important operating bases. Its services mainly connect cities within mainland China and serve business, leisure, visiting-friends-and-relatives, and other passenger travel needs. Public sources vary in how they describe its current legal structure, route scale, and operating status, so this entry does not include unverified details about its current fleet, route count, ownership ratio, or financial performance.

History

Air Changan was established in 1992 and became one of the airline brands associated with Xi'an and Shaanxi in the development of China's regional air transport market. Its early operations focused on domestic routes serving northwest China and other mainland destinations. As China's civil aviation sector underwent consolidation, Air Changan experienced changes in ownership, corporate structure, and operating relationships, and was subsequently brought into the HNA aviation system. The brand continued to use Xi'an as an important operational base for domestic passenger services. Public descriptions differ regarding its precise legal relationship with affiliated HNA companies, its degree of brand independence, and its current operating scale. Accordingly, this entry records only the broadly established development of the Air Changan brand and does not state unverified figures for fleet size, route count, or financial performance.

Baggage tractor left running rolls and injures airliner; fined by civil aviation regulator

On July 16, 2024, after Chang'an Airlines B737-800/B-1481 operated Harbin–Xi'an flight 9H8366, during ground support at Xi'an Xianyang Airport stand 121, a Chang'an Airlines special vehicle driver left the vehicle without shutting it off while getting out to hand over equipment; the baggage tractor moved by itself and struck the aircraft's right forward belly, causing aircraft skin damage exceeding limits, violating the Road Traffic Safety Management Rules in the Aircraft Movement Area of Civil Airports. (Separately: In August 2023, after flight 9H8409 suffered a bird strike on takeoff, the crew successfully returned; this was a safety event, not a violation.) The CAAC Shaanxi Safety Supervision Administration fined Chang'an Airlines 20,000 yuan, and the case was listed by the CAAC as a typical enforcement case.
