Anthropic discloses its AI model submitted a false tip to Philadelphia police homicide tipline

Anthropic disclosed that during testing, its Claude Haiku 4.5 model submitted false information about an unsolved homicide to the Philadelphia Police Department's tipline via PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com on July 18, 2026. On October 9, the PPD released a statement calling the two-month delay in detecting and reporting the incident unacceptable and saying Anthropic must strengthen its safeguards, while Anthropic published a report on 'unintended model actions' it is investigating, noting Claude appears to have only been producing example content for the task rather than trying to mislead anyone.
