Overview

Capgemini is a French multinational provider of consulting, technology, engineering, digital transformation and business operations services. The group is headquartered in Paris and serves clients across major industries and public-sector domains worldwide. Its work spans strategy and transformation, software and application services, systems integration, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, data and artificial intelligence, engineering and research and development, customer experience, and managed business processes. Capgemini generally operates as a business-to-business partner rather than as a consumer-facing product company, helping large organizations modernize operating models, build digital platforms, migrate technology estates, and apply emerging technologies to commercial and public-service challenges. The company traces its origins to October 1, 1967, when Serge Kampf founded Sogeti in Grenoble, France. The original business focused on enterprise management and data processing. During the 1970s, Sogeti expanded through the acquisition of Gemini Computer Systems and the French software company Centre d’Analyse et de Programmation, adopting the name CAP Gemini Sogeti. This combination established the corporate lineage that later became Cap Gemini and ultimately Capgemini. The group developed through a mixture of organic growth and acquisitions, particularly in consulting, outsourcing, systems integration and engineering. A major turning point came in 2000, when Cap Gemini acquired Ernst & Young Consulting for approximately $11 billion during the technology-market boom. The acquired consulting business was combined with Gemini Consulting, creating Cap Gemini Ernst & Young. The transaction increased the group’s scale and consulting capabilities but also left the company exposed when the dot-com bubble collapsed. Capgemini subsequently restructured, simplified its operating model, divested its North American consulting arm to Accenture, and placed greater emphasis on outsourcing, offshore delivery and global industrialization. Expansion in India became an important part of this strategy, supported by acquisitions including Kanbay and Thesys. In the 2010s and 2020s, Capgemini repositioned itself as a broader transformation partner. The acquisition of iGate in 2015 strengthened its North American technology-services presence. The purchase of LiquidHub in 2018 expanded digital customer-engagement capabilities, while the 2019 acquisition of Altran significantly enlarged the group’s engineering and R&D activities. Altran’s capabilities, together with Capgemini’s existing digital-engineering operations, were organized into Capgemini Engineering in 2021. The group also developed specialized business platforms and communities, including Capgemini Invent for strategy, design and transformation; Sogeti for local technology and engineering services; the Capgemini Research Institute; and the Applied Innovation Exchange network of innovation locations. Capgemini’s current business is organized around the convergence of business consulting, technology, engineering and operations. Its offerings include enterprise and application modernization, cloud adoption, intelligent industry, data platforms, generative AI, cybersecurity, digital customer experience, sustainability transformation and business-process services. The group has invested in quantum-computing research through Capgemini Quantum Lab, established with IBM, and has expanded its generative-AI portfolio through internal offerings, partnerships and acquisitions. The 2025 acquisition of WNS Global Services broadened the group’s business-process-management and technology-enabled operations capabilities, while the purchase of Cloud4C further expanded managed cloud services. As reported in Capgemini’s 2025 integrated reporting, the group had more than 420,000 employees or team members operating in more than 50 countries and generated approximately €22.5 billion in 2025 revenue…

History

Capgemini’s history begins in Grenoble, France, where Serge Kampf founded Sogeti on October 1, 1967. The original company was created as an enterprise-management and data-processing services business at a time when large organizations were beginning to adopt centralized computing and information systems. Kampf’s strategy was to build a professional-services company that could help clients use information technology in practical business settings rather than merely sell hardware or software. During the 1970s, Sogeti expanded beyond its initial French base. It acquired Gemini Computer Systems in 1974 and Centre d’Analyse et de Programmation, commonly known as CAP, in 1975. Following these transactions and the resolution of naming issues involving CAP UK, the company adopted the name CAP Gemini Sogeti. The new identity reflected the combination of the acquired organizations and marked the beginning of the corporate brand that would eventually become Capgemini. The group expanded internationally in the early 1980s. In 1981, it entered the United States through the acquisition of DASD Corporation, a Milwaukee-based data-conversion company with approximately 500 employees across 20 branches. The U.S. business operated for a period under the Cap Gemini DASD name. In 1990, Cap Gemini Sogeti acquired the Hoskyns Group in the United Kingdom, adding a significant IT-outsourcing and managed-services capability. In 1996, the company simplified its name to Cap Gemini, introduced a new group logo and progressively rebranded operating companies around the world. The most consequential transaction of the late 1990s and early 2000s was the acquisition of Ernst & Young Consulting, announced in March 2000 for approximately $11 billion. The acquired business was integrated with Gemini Consulting to form Cap Gemini Ernst & Young. The deal was completed at the peak of the dot-com boom, and the collapse of technology valuations soon created severe financial and operational pressure. Capgemini’s share value fell sharply in 2001, and the company recorded operating losses during the subsequent period. Management responded by restructuring the organization, reducing thirteen disciplines to four broad areas: consulting, technology services, local professional services and outsourcing. The group also sold its North American consulting arm to Accenture and increased its focus on offshore delivery and outsourcing. India became central to Capgemini’s global-delivery model during the middle and late 2000s. The acquisition of Kanbay in 2006 strengthened the group’s presence in India and expanded its financial-services and technology capabilities. In 2008, Capgemini acquired four former Getronics divisions, adding local infrastructure and managed-services activities. In 2010, it acquired a controlling interest in Brazilian IT-services company CPM Braxis and purchased Indian IT specialist Thesys. These transactions contributed to Capgemini’s evolution from a European consulting firm into a globally distributed technology-services organization. The 2010s brought renewed emphasis on digital transformation, cloud, customer experience and global scale. In 2015, Capgemini acquired U.S.-based technology and services company iGate for approximately $4 billion. The transaction expanded the group’s North American delivery footprint and strengthened its application and infrastructure-services portfolio. In 2017, Capgemini S.A. was reorganized as Capgemini SE, and the company’s Euronext identifier changed from CAP GEMINI to CAPGEMINI. In 2018, Capgemini acquired LiquidHub, a Philadelphia-based digital customer-engagement company, to support growth in digital and cloud services in North America. The group also created Capgemini Invent, a strategy, design and transformation division that expanded the former Capgemini Consulting business and incorporated capabilities associated with frog, Fahrenheit 212, Idean and June21. Capgemini Invent brought together management consulting, innovation, design, data and technology transformation. Capgemini’s 2019 acquisition of Altran was the largest in its history. Altran contributed engineering, product development and research-and-development expertise across industries such as automotive, aerospace, telecommunications and life sciences. Capgemini also obtained frog design and Cambridge Consultants through the transaction. In 2021, the engineering and R&D activities inherited from Altran were combined with Capgemini’s digital-engineering activities to form Capgemini Engineering. The company continued to broaden its ecosystem during the 2020s. In 2020, it introduced the “Get the future you want” brand promise. In 2021, it helped establish Future4care, a European digital-health accelerator, and acquired Australian and New Zealand businesses including RXP Services, Acclimation, Empired and Intergen. In January 2022, it established Capgemini Quantum Lab in collaboration with IBM. The laboratory was designed to help clients assess quantum-computing use cases, build internal expertise and develop potentially licensable technologies. Capgemini also expanded its generative-AI offerings in 2023 and acquired Syniti in 2024 to strengthen enterprise-data-management capabilities. In 2025, Capgemini agreed to acquire WNS Global Services in a $3.3 billion cash transaction and later completed the acquisition of Cloud4C. These deals extended the group’s capabilities in business-process management, analytics, managed services, cloud and generative-AI-enabled operations. Capgemini’s 2025 reporting described more than 420,000 team members across more than 50 countries and approximately €22.5 billion in annual revenue. The group has also faced criticism and reputational challenges. A French Senate inquiry characterized the company as an example of aggressive tax optimization in relation to its French tax position and public contracts. Separately, Capgemini Government Solutions, a U.S. subsidiary, became the focus of controversy over contracts with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, including a 2025 skip-tracing contract. After public and political pressure in early 2026, Capgemini announced that it would initiate a sale of the subsidiary. These events have added governance, transparency and responsible-business issues to the company’s broader transformation and technology agenda.

Capgemini Government Solutions became the subject of public and political criticism after reports that the U.S. subsidiary had secured work for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, including skip-tracing services intended to help locate people for enforcement and removal operations.
