Overview
Factorial Energy is an American battery technology company focused on solid-state battery cells for electric vehicles and other applications. Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts, the company has positioned itself as a developer of lithium-metal solid-state batteries, a chemistry it markets under the Factorial Electrolyte System Technology (FEST) name. Rather than building its own mass-market battery plants from the outset, Factorial has pursued a strategy of developing the cell technology and working with automotive partners and investors to industrialize it. Factorial's core proposition is higher energy density and improved safety relative to conventional lithium-ion cells, which the company argues can extend vehicle range and reduce battery weight. Its technology roadmap has included quasi-solid-state and solid-state cells, with the company reporting progress on larger-format cells intended for automotive qualification. Factorial has also discussed applications beyond passenger cars, including commercial vehicles and other transport and industrial uses. Among the company's most visible relationships are partnerships and investments involving major automakers. Mercedes-Benz has been a prominent backer and development partner, and Stellantis and Hyundai have also been associated with Factorial through investment and joint development agreements. These relationships are central to Factorial's positioning: the company aims to be a technology supplier to established vehicle manufacturers rather than a consumer-facing battery brand. Factorial has attracted venture and strategic funding and has expanded its facilities in Massachusetts, including development and pilot manufacturing space. The company remains privately held. Its public profile rests on technical milestones, partnership announcements and the broader investor interest in solid-state batteries as a potential next step for electric-vehicle energy storage. Because solid-state batteries are difficult to manufacture at scale and cost, Factorial's commercial success depends on converting development agreements into qualified, mass-produced cells.
History
Factorial Energy was founded in 2013 in Massachusetts as a developer of solid-state battery technology. The company emerged during a period of renewed interest in moving beyond conventional lithium-ion chemistry, driven by electric-vehicle range and safety requirements. Factorial built its approach around a lithium-metal anode and a proprietary electrolyte system, which it branded FEST (Factorial Electrolyte System Technology). In its early years Factorial focused on materials development and small-format cells, gradually scaling cell size and reporting performance data to attract automotive interest. The company's strategy centered on partnerships with established manufacturers, allowing it to develop cells against real vehicle requirements rather than only laboratory targets. A significant phase came with strategic investment from major automakers. Mercedes-Benz became a prominent investor and development partner, and Factorial also established relationships with Stellantis and Hyundai involving investment and joint development agreements. These deals gave Factorial both capital and validation, and shaped its identity as an OEM-facing technology supplier. Factorial expanded its Massachusetts footprint, adding development and pilot-scale manufacturing capabilities to support larger-format cell work. The company has continued to report progress on solid-state cells intended for automotive qualification, while the industry as a whole has faced the challenge of bringing solid-state batteries to cost-competitive mass production. Factorial remains privately held and has not become a consumer battery brand. Its history to date is one of technology development, strategic automotive partnerships and facility expansion, with full commercialization dependent on converting development programs into qualified, manufacturable cells.
