Overview

Geely is the commonly used name for Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, a privately controlled Chinese automotive conglomerate headquartered in Hangzhou. Founded by entrepreneur Li Shufu in 1986, the business began as a manufacturer of refrigerator components, moved into motorcycles in 1994, and entered automobile production in 1997. Its first passenger car, the Geely Haoqing, left the assembly line in 1998, although national authorization for automobile production was not obtained until 2001. A holding-company structure was established in 2003, helping organize the group’s growing collection of automotive, technology and mobility businesses. Geely’s expansion combined organic development with acquisitions, equity investments and joint ventures. In 2010 it acquired Volvo Cars from Ford for approximately US$1.8 billion, a transaction that became one of the most prominent overseas acquisitions by a Chinese automaker. Volvo retained operational autonomy while benefiting from Geely’s investment and access to the group’s engineering resources. Geely subsequently developed a broad international portfolio that has included stakes or operating relationships involving Lotus, Proton, Polestar, Smart, Volvo Group, Aston Martin, Renault and other companies. The group’s principal passenger-car activities are associated with Geely Auto Group and include the Geely, Lynk & Co and Zeekr brands. Geely-branded vehicles generally address the mass and upper-mass market, while Lynk & Co occupies a more design-led and connected position between Geely and Volvo, and Zeekr focuses on premium battery-electric vehicles. The group also has commercial-vehicle businesses, including Farizon and London Electric Vehicle Company, motorcycle interests through Qianjiang Motorcycle and related brands, and technology and mobility activities such as autonomous driving, ride-hailing and flying-vehicle projects. Geely has used shared vehicle architectures, powertrains, research facilities and manufacturing capabilities across brands while maintaining separate market identities. The Compact Modular Architecture has supported vehicles developed for Geely, Lynk & Co and Volvo-related programs; the Sustainable Experience Architecture has supported electric vehicles including products from Zeekr and Smart. Partnerships with Daimler, Baidu and Renault have extended the group’s reach into electric-vehicle software, global smart mobility and powertrain development. The group’s present structure is multinational and spans research and development, design, components, manufacturing, sales, after-sales service, financing, commercial transport and emerging technologies. Geely Holding reported a broad portfolio of brands and investments rather than operating solely as a single consumer-facing marque. Because ownership and corporate relationships have changed over time, individual businesses such as Volvo Cars, Polestar, Lotus, Proton and Smart should be distinguished from the Geely corporate group itself.

History

Geely was created in 1986 by Li Shufu in Zhejiang as a producer of refrigerator parts. The founder financed the early business with family borrowing, and the company later moved into motorcycles after acquiring a state-run enterprise in 1994. Its motorcycle activity helped Geely develop manufacturing experience and a consumer brand before it attempted to enter China’s highly regulated automobile sector. The company prepared automobile factories and began producing its first car, the Haoqing, in 1998. At that time Geely was unusual because it was a privately founded automobile company in a market dominated by state-owned enterprises and foreign joint ventures. A national production license was granted in November 2001, allowing regular mass production. By 2002, Geely had become one of China’s larger domestic automobile brands. In 2002 the business was reorganized from a family-operated company into a joint-stock enterprise with professional management. Zhejiang Geely Holding Group was formally established in March 2003. In 2004, Geely gained control of the Hong Kong-listed Guorun Holdings, which was renamed Geely Automobile Holdings while retaining its stock-market listing. This provided a listed platform for financing and organizing the group’s automotive operations. International expansion accelerated during the following decade. Geely purchased Australian automatic-transmission maker Drivetrain Systems International in 2009, later reducing its stake after the business incurred losses. Its most important transaction was the purchase of Volvo Cars from Ford. The deal was agreed in 2010 after a process that began when Ford put Volvo up for sale during the global financial crisis. Geely allowed Volvo considerable managerial independence while supporting product development, platforms, production and international growth. The relationship contributed to technology transfer, engineering expertise and the development of shared architectures such as CMA. Geely also expanded into London taxis. It first bought a minority stake in Manganese Bronze Holdings in 2006 and established a joint venture to produce taxi components and vehicles in China. After Manganese Bronze entered administration, Geely acquired the remaining business in 2013 and reorganized it as London Electric Vehicle Company, which continued development of electric taxi products in Coventry. From 2016 onward, the group increasingly used distinct brands to cover different price and technology positions. Lynk & Co was unveiled in 2016 as a connected, internationally oriented marque using technology shared with Geely and Volvo. In 2017 Geely acquired control of Lotus and invested in Proton, giving it a stronger presence in sports cars and Southeast Asian markets. It also acquired the flying-car company Terrafugia. Volvo Cars’ performance division Polestar was separated into a standalone electric-vehicle brand in 2017, while Geely invested in Volvo Group, the separate truck and construction-equipment company that had formerly owned Volvo Cars. Geely’s partnerships broadened further in the late 2010s and 2020s. Li Shufu acquired a substantial stake in Daimler in 2018, and Geely and Daimler established a 50–50 Smart joint venture in 2020. Smart’s electric vehicles use Geely-developed architecture. Geely also formed an electric-vehicle partnership with Baidu in 2021, and established strategic cooperation with Renault involving vehicle platforms, Renault Korea and powertrain development. The latter eventually produced Horse Powertrain, a jointly owned powertrain company created in 2024. In 2021 Geely launched Zeekr, a premium electric-vehicle brand, beginning with the Zeekr 001. Zeekr later became a separately listed company in the United States. Geely’s portfolio also includes Farizon commercial vehicles, motorcycle businesses such as Qianjiang and Benelli, mobility services, autonomous-driving activities and other new businesses. The group therefore functions as a multinational automotive house whose businesses range from mass-market cars to premium electric vehicles, commercial transport, motorcycles, components and automotive technology.

Geely vehicles included in China's 4.3 million vehicle recall over hidden door handles

China's State Administration for Market Regulation announced the country's largest automotive recall, covering 4.3 million vehicles from nine brands, over hidden door handles that may be difficult to open in an emergency. The remedy is installation of high-visibility warning labels and software updates to automatically lower windows after a crash. Chinese-made Tesla vehicles accounted for 2.98 million of the recalled cars; other affected brands include Xpeng, Xiaomi, Geely (Zeekr and Lynk & Co), Leapmotor, Chery, BAIC, Dongfeng and FAW Group (Hongqi).

  • 2026

Geely among automakers in China recall over emergency door handle issue

China's State Administration for Market Regulation announced a recall plan by nine automakers, including Geely, Tesla, Xiaomi, Leapmotor, XPeng, Chery, Dongfeng, BAIC and FAW, covering more than 4 million vehicles due to issues with interior emergency mechanical door handles. The handles are similar in color to the interior, making them hard to identify and operate, which in extreme cases such as a severe collision causing low-voltage system failure could hinder occupants' escape and outside rescue. Tesla's recall is the largest at 2.976 million vehicles. Tesla's remedies are to affix free warning labels at the emergency handle positions and to release an OTA software update adding an automatic window-lowering strategy after accidents. Tesla China customer service said not all owners need to visit a service center; stickers are expected to reach service centers by end of September and can be collected over a three-year implementation period, with the recall formally starting September 25, 2026.

46,108 Binrui vehicles recalled over emissions issue

In October 2025, Zhejiang Geely recalled 46,108 Binrui vehicles. Unclear indications of the applicable oil type on the oil filler cap and in the manual could lead to the use of unsuitable oil, in extreme cases causing engine damage and unreasonable emissions; the company is replacing the caps with clearer indications and inspecting engines. This entry is limited to the specified batch.

  • 2022

Consumers report Geely vehicle and service complaints

In February 2022, a report relayed complaints that Geely vehicle buyers had posted on the Black Cat Complaint platform. According to the report, consumers alleged that maintenance promised at the time of purchase was not provided. They also reported vehicle quality problems, including infotainment failures and an engine noise issue that remained unresolved. The report presents these as consumer allegations and does not establish a determination on them; no findings, outcomes, or responses from Geely are stated in the source.

  • 2020

Geely responds to an incident at its auto-show stand
