Overview

GitHub is a developer platform operated by GitHub, Inc., a subsidiary of Microsoft. It provides hosted Git repositories and a broad set of tools for planning, writing, reviewing, securing, testing, deploying, and documenting software. The service is built around Git, the distributed version-control system created by Linus Torvalds, but extends Git with a web-based collaboration layer that includes pull requests, code review, issue tracking, project boards, discussions, wikis, access controls, notifications, and social features such as profiles, followers, feeds, and contribution graphs. The company was formed in 2007 and the GitHub website launched in 2008 after a beta period. Its founding team included Tom Preston-Werner, Chris Wanstrath, P. J. Hyett, and Scott Chacon. The platform initially became especially prominent among open-source communities because it made it simple to publish repositories, fork projects, propose changes, and merge contributions through a browser-oriented workflow. GitHub’s public repositories also became a discovery and distribution channel for software, documentation, datasets, educational material, and configuration files. During its first decade, GitHub expanded from repository hosting into a more comprehensive software-development platform. GitHub Pages enabled repository-backed static websites; Gist provided version-controlled sharing of smaller code snippets; and GitHub Enterprise offered organizations a self-managed or privately deployed version of the service. GitHub also developed integrations, security features, package distribution, code analysis, project management, and continuous integration and continuous delivery capabilities. GitHub Actions, introduced in 2018 and generally available in 2019, allowed users to define automated build, test, release, and deployment workflows using hosted or self-managed runners and reusable actions from a marketplace. Codespaces later added cloud-hosted development environments accessible through the browser or compatible development tools. Microsoft announced an agreement to acquire GitHub in June 2018 for $7.5 billion in Microsoft stock, and the transaction closed in October of that year. Microsoft said GitHub would retain operational independence as a community, platform, and business. Nat Friedman became chief executive after the acquisition, followed by Thomas Dohmke in 2021. The ownership change generated concern among some developers because of Microsoft’s history with certain previous acquisitions, and competing services reported increased interest from users considering migration. At the same time, Microsoft was already a major GitHub user and hosted many open-source projects and development resources there, making the acquisition consistent with its broader cloud and developer-tools strategy. GitHub serves individual developers, open-source maintainers, educational institutions, startups, public-sector organizations, and large enterprises. Its commercial offerings include paid individual and organization plans, GitHub Enterprise, advanced security capabilities, hosted automation, package and artifact services, and AI-assisted development tools. GitHub Copilot, developed with Microsoft and OpenAI technologies, added code suggestions and conversational assistance to the platform’s developer-productivity portfolio. GitHub Education provides learning resources and benefits for students, teachers, and schools. The platform’s scale has made it a central infrastructure layer for modern software development. In January 2023, GitHub reported more than 100 million developers and over 420 million repositories. The service has hosted a large and diverse body of public and private code, although public availability does not by itself establish that a repository meets any particular legal definition of open source. GitHub continues to operate internationally, with products and services spanning repository management, collaboration, security, automation…

History

GitHub’s origins trace to a collaboration among Tom Preston-Werner, Chris Wanstrath, P. J. Hyett, and Scott Chacon. Development began in 2007, and GitHub, Inc. was established in San Francisco. The web service entered beta before launching publicly in April 2008. Its central idea was to make distributed version control easier to use as a social and collaborative activity: developers could host Git repositories, publish projects, fork other repositories, discuss changes, and submit pull requests for review. The service grew rapidly through adoption by open-source developers and technology companies. During its first year online, GitHub reported tens of thousands of public repositories. It reached approximately one million repositories in 2010, surpassed two million the following year, and passed three million users and five million repositories in early 2013. By the end of 2013, the repository count had reached about ten million. GitHub’s public contribution model helped establish pull requests, issue discussions, repository wikis, contributor graphs, and fork-based collaboration as familiar parts of software development. GitHub broadened its scope beyond core repository hosting. GitHub Pages, introduced in 2008, allowed users to publish static sites from repository content. Gist provided version-controlled sharing for smaller code fragments. GitHub Enterprise, available from 2011, brought comparable functionality to organizations requiring private deployment or controlled environments. The company also added project management, discussions, integrations, package hosting, security alerts, code analysis, and educational programs. In 2015, it opened an office in Japan, its first outside the United States. The company’s governance and leadership changed after harassment allegations involving co-founder and then-chief executive Tom Preston-Werner and his wife, Theresa. Preston-Werner resigned in 2014, Chris Wanstrath became chief executive, and Julio Avalos assumed responsibility for business operations. The episode prompted organizational changes, including the introduction of additional management structures into what had previously been described as a relatively flat organization. GitHub raised substantial venture funding as its user base expanded. Andreessen Horowitz invested $100 million in 2012, and a 2015 financing round of $250 million led by Sequoia Capital valued the company at approximately $2 billion. Microsoft had become an important GitHub user through open-source projects such as .NET Core, PowerShell, Visual Studio Code, Windows Terminal, and related documentation. In June 2018, Microsoft announced its intention to acquire GitHub for $7.5 billion in stock. The transaction closed in October 2018. Nat Friedman became chief executive under Microsoft, and GitHub continued to present itself as an independently operated community, platform, and business within the Microsoft group. The acquisition caused uncertainty among some developers, who cited concerns about platform dependence and Microsoft’s record with earlier acquisitions. Competitors including GitLab and Bitbucket reported increased interest from users considering migration. GitHub nevertheless continued to expand under Microsoft. It launched GitHub Actions as a workflow-automation service, made core private-repository features available without charge to a broader audience, acquired code-analysis company Semmle in 2019, acquired npm in 2020, and established the GitHub Archive Program to preserve open-source code. GitHub also developed Codespaces, GitHub Advanced Security, GitHub Copilot, and other products that moved the brand toward an integrated software-development lifecycle platform. GitHub experienced a major DDoS attack in 2018 and later faced controversy when GitHub Enterprise Server source code appeared online in 2020. The company said the latter incident resulted from accidental distribution to Enterprise customers and was not a breach of GitHub’s production servers. In 2021, Thomas Dohmke succeeded Nat Friedman as chief executive. By 2023, GitHub reported more than 100 million developers and over 420 million repositories. The service remains a major global venue for proprietary and public software development, although hosting a public repository does not automatically mean that its contents satisfy a formal open-source license or definition.

GitHub experienced a large-scale outage from 13:28 to 21:15 UTC on August 17, 2026, lasting 7 hours 47 minutes and affecting Issues, Pull Requests, API, Actions and Copilot. GitHub attributed the incident to Istio sidecar concurrency saturation, autoscaling that monitored only main services and ignored sidecars, central load balancer saturation with four HAProxy nodes exhausting flow limits, and a Visual Studio Code client retry defect that inflated Copilot token traffic to about 10 times normal. Most services recovered around 16:36 UTC, GitHub Actions at 18:03 UTC, and Copilot Token Service last.
