Greiner's history begins in 1868, when the young Carl Albert and his wife Emilie Greiner opened a general store in Nürtingen, Germany, selling, among other things, self-produced soda water sealed with handmade cork stoppers. In 1876 Carl Albert Greiner received a patent for his invention of a fourfold cork-cutting machine, replacing manual cork cutting, which marked the start of a focus on producing and selling cork stoppers. In 1880, as cork production developed into mass production and the volume of rejects grew, the founder made firelighters from shredded cork remnants, giving rise to the recycling idea at Greiner. In 1899 the second generation joined the family business and, with the construction of a cork stopper factory in Kremsmünster in Upper Austria, laid the foundation for today's company headquarters; the decision for the location was based on the on-site hydroelectric power plant. In 1921 the first location outside Europe was founded, as export connections worldwide, established through the founders' four sons' sales trips as far as Australia, Asia and America, brought international renown.
