Greiner's history began in 1868, when Carl Albert and Emilie Greiner opened a general store in Nürtingen, Germany, selling, among other things, self-produced soda water sealed with handmade cork stoppers. In 1876 Carl Albert Greiner received a patent for a fourfold cork-cutting machine, marking the start of the company's focus on cork stopper production and sales. In 1880, as cork production became mass production and waste volumes grew, the founder made firelighters from shredded cork remnants, which the company describes as the birth of the recycling idea at Greiner. In 1899 the second generation joined the family business and built a cork stopper factory in Kremsmünster, Upper Austria, laying the foundation for today's company headquarters; the site was chosen because of an on-site hydroelectric power plant. In 1921 the first location outside Europe was founded, in Chile, following sites in Portugal, Spain and France, as export connections established through the founders' four sons' sales trips to Australia, Asia and America brought international recognition.
