Overview

Hasbro is an American multinational company that develops and markets toys, games, entertainment properties, and licensed consumer products. It was founded in 1923 in Providence, Rhode Island, by three Hassenfeld brothers. The original business sold textile remnants and later made pencil boxes, school supplies, pencils, modeling clay, and children's kits. By the 1940s, the company had become primarily a toy manufacturer and had begun using the Hasbro trade name, derived from Hassenfeld Brothers. The company's early breakthrough came with Mr. Potato Head, acquired from inventor George Lerner in 1952. Hasbro also became a major Disney licensee in the 1950s. In 1964 it introduced G.I. Joe, deliberately describing the product as an "action figure" rather than a doll. G.I. Joe became a major commercial success and established Hasbro's ability to build toy brands around character, storytelling, and media. The company adopted the Hasbro Industries name in 1968 and later shortened it to Hasbro, Inc. Hasbro's modern portfolio was built through a combination of internal development, licensing, and acquisitions. It revived G.I. Joe in the early 1980s, launched My Little Pony, and licensed Japanese toy concepts that became Transformers. The Transformers line was supported by animated television programming and became one of the company's defining global franchises. Acquisitions of Milton Bradley, Parker Brothers, Kenner, Tonka, Galoob, Wizards of the Coast, Avalon Hill, and Cranium expanded Hasbro into board games, trading-card games, role-playing games, outdoor products, and additional character brands. Important properties associated with the company include Monopoly, Scrabble, The Game of Life, Clue, Risk, Battleship, Play-Doh, Playskool, Nerf, Furby, Pokémon trading-card products, and Magic: The Gathering. The company has repeatedly attempted to extend its brands into digital entertainment and screen media. Hasbro Interactive was established in the 1990s but was sold to Infogrames in 2001. Hasbro later formed Hasbro Studios, collaborated with Discovery on The Hub television network, and developed film and television projects based on its intellectual property. Its 2019 acquisition of Entertainment One expanded its media operations and brought properties such as Peppa Pig and PJ Masks into the wider Hasbro portfolio. In 2023, Hasbro sold Entertainment One's film and television business to Lionsgate while retaining the family and franchise assets it considered strategically relevant. Today Hasbro operates as a branded play and entertainment company rather than only a conventional toy manufacturer. Its business spans toys, games, collectibles, licensed merchandise, tabletop gaming, digital gaming, and entertainment development. Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming is particularly important for Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, and related digital and tabletop ecosystems. Hasbro's principal competitive set includes Mattel and other toy, game, licensing, and entertainment companies. Its strategy emphasizes durable intellectual property, cross-platform storytelling, licensing, direct consumer engagement, and fewer larger brands.

History

Hasbro began as Hassenfeld Brothers in Rhode Island in 1923. Herman, Hillel, and Henry Hassenfeld initially sold textile remnants, then moved into pencil cases and school supplies. After a supplier began producing pencil cases, the company started making its own pencils. It developed modeling clay and doctor and nurse kits, and by the early 1940s its business was centered on toys. The company entered plastics during the Second World War and continued broadening its product range. Mr. Potato Head, obtained from George Lerner in 1952, was the company's first major mass-market toy success. Hasbro also secured a significant Disney licensing relationship in 1954. In 1964 it introduced G.I. Joe, a military-inspired figure marketed as an action figure. The product became an exceptional seller, but changing consumer conditions and rising material costs later led to its discontinuation in 1975. During the 1960s and 1970s, Hasbro diversified into media-linked products, childcare ventures, cookware, and other categories, with uneven results. It also faced product-safety controversies involving Flubber, Javelin Darts, and Hypo-Squirt. The company adopted the Hasbro Industries name in 1968 and entered public ownership. Financial pressure in the late 1970s led management to reduce the product line and concentrate on simpler, lower-cost toys with longer commercial lives. In the early 1980s Hasbro revived G.I. Joe with a contemporary anti-terrorist theme and launched My Little Pony. It also licensed Japanese toy concepts that became Transformers, then supported the line with an animated series. These moves demonstrated the company's emerging model of combining toys with stories and media. Acquisition became central to Hasbro's expansion. Milton Bradley brought games such as The Game of Life and Twister; Kenner added major character and action-toy capabilities; Tonka brought Parker Brothers and Monopoly; Galoob added additional toy properties; and Wizards of the Coast established a powerful position in collectible card games and role-playing games. Hasbro also formed Hasbro Interactive in 1995, although the unit was sold to Infogrames in 2001 after losses. The company later expanded its entertainment operations through Hasbro Studios, television partnerships, and film-development agreements. A 2010 partnership with Discovery created The Hub television network, later Hub Network and Discovery Family. My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic became the network's signature success and showed how Hasbro could develop a toy property into a broad entertainment community. Hasbro acquired Cranium in 2008 and Entertainment One in 2019. The Entertainment One purchase broadened the company's media and family-brand portfolio, but Hasbro subsequently sold the film and television operation to Lionsgate in 2023. The remaining company continues to focus on branded play, tabletop gaming, digital gaming, licensing, and selected entertainment initiatives.
