Overview

Hengdian Group, founded in 1975 and headquartered in Hengdian Town, Dongyang, Zhejiang, is a renowned Chinese private conglomerate. Its businesses span electrical and electronic, pharmaceutical and chemical, film and tourism, and new integrated services. Hengdian World Studios is one of the largest film shooting bases globally, known as 'China's Hollywood'. The group also engages in magnetic materials, lighting electronics, and pharmaceutical chemicals.

History

Hengdian Group was founded in 1975 in Hengdian, Dongyang, Zhejiang Province, when Xu Wenrong led the establishment of a silk reeling factory. This marked the beginning of what the company describes as its first round of entrepreneurship. In the decades that followed, the group diversified from textiles into magnetic materials, electronics, lighting, pharmaceuticals, and other manufacturing sectors, building an industrial base in Hengdian. A major turning point came in 1996, when Xu Wenrong began building the Guangzhou Street film and television shooting base, which led to the creation of Hengdian World Studios (Hengdian Film & TV City). This move, initially controversial, transformed Hengdian into a major center for China's film and television industry. The group subsequently developed a full industry chain spanning film bases, film services, entertainment, cinema chains, film production, and film education, earning Hengdian the nickname "China's film and television dream factory." In 2001, Xu Yong'an became president of Hengdian Group Holdings Co., Ltd. and set the strategic goal of an "international Hengdian." The group acquired the listed company Qingdao Dongfang, which was later restructured. Over the years, Hengdian Group nurtured six listed companies: Hengdian DMEGC (002056), Hengdian Group Tospo Lighting (603303), Yingluohua Technology (000795), Apeloa Pharmaceutical (000739), Hengdian Entertainment (603103), and Nanhua Futures (603093). These platforms cover magnetic materials, lighting, micro motors, pharmaceuticals, film and entertainment, and financial derivatives. In 2017, at the age of 83, Xu Wenrong completed the Hengdian Yuanming New Garden (横店圆明新园), a major cultural tourism project. The group has continued to expand its modern services, including finance, international trade, aviation, real estate, and urban public services. It has also invested in education and healthcare, with institutions such as Zhejiang Hengdian Film & Television Vocational College and Hengdian Wenrong Hospital. Today, Hengdian Group reports annual revenue of nearly 100 billion yuan (95.6 billion yuan in 2025), employs over 60,000 people globally, and operates in more than 150 countries and regions. It remains rooted in Hengdian, contributing to the region's development and helping it become a national pilot for comprehensive small-city reform and a national film and television industry experimental zone.
