Overview

HK Express is a Hong Kong-based low-cost airline headquartered at Hong Kong International Airport. It operates scheduled passenger services from Hong Kong to destinations across Asia, with a network historically focused on Japan, mainland China, Southeast Asia, South Korea and Taiwan. The airline uses Hong Kong International Airport as its principal hub and operates an all-Airbus A320-family fleet. Its low-cost model emphasizes relatively simple fares, optional ancillary services and high-frequency leisure and short-haul international flying. The company was incorporated as Hong Kong Express Airways Limited in March 2004. It was established under the ownership of Macau casino entrepreneur Stanley Ho and initially pursued a regional-airline model using Embraer E170 aircraft. The carrier received authorization to transport passengers, cargo and mail between Hong Kong and selected mainland Chinese destinations in 2005. It launched scheduled services to Guangzhou in September 2005, followed by routes including Hangzhou and Ningbo. During its early period, the airline also operated charter services and expanded to destinations such as Chiang Mai, Chongqing, Taichung and other regional points. Ownership changed during the airline's first decade. HNA Group, the parent of Hainan Airlines, acquired a substantial stake in 2006. The relationship gave the airline access to a larger Chinese aviation group while preserving its status as a Hong Kong-registered carrier. HK Express later expanded its network and fleet, including the introduction of Boeing 737-800 aircraft and services to major mainland cities such as Beijing and Shanghai. A major strategic turning point came in 2013, when the company announced its transformation from a regional airline into a low-cost carrier. It adopted the shorter HK Express name and began low-cost operations in October 2013. The transformation was accompanied by rapid international expansion, particularly to Japanese and Southeast Asian destinations, and by a shift toward an Airbus A320-family fleet. The airline subsequently developed a distinct consumer-facing identity, using the slogan “Gotta Go” after its earlier “Your Move” positioning. HK Express also developed ancillary and loyalty offerings. In 2016 it introduced Reward-U, a points programme that allowed members to redeem flights and gifts and to combine points through small groups. Reward-U ended in December 2019 as its benefits were integrated with Cathay Pacific's Asia Miles programme. In 2017 the airline launched U-Explore, an activities-planning service developed with Klook. In 2019 Cathay Pacific agreed to acquire HK Express from HNA Group and related shareholders for HK$4.93 billion. The transaction was completed in July 2019, making HK Express a wholly owned Cathay Pacific subsidiary. Cathay Pacific stated that the airline would continue to operate as a standalone low-cost carrier rather than being merged into Cathay's full-service operation. The acquisition also resulted in HK Express leaving the U-FLY Alliance. Cathay Pacific subsequently announced plans for further fleet development, including Airbus A321neo aircraft; the first A321neo entered HK Express service in 2023. The COVID-19 pandemic severely affected the airline. HK Express suspended all flight operations from March to April 2020 and announced a further suspension in June, followed by a phased resumption beginning in August. As travel restrictions eased, the airline rebuilt its network and announced services including Taipei, Kaohsiung and Singapore. The carrier remains positioned as Cathay Group's dedicated low-cost platform for short-haul and regional Asian travel, operating alongside Cathay Pacific's full-service network.

History

HK Express was incorporated on 10 March 2004 as Hong Kong Express Airways Limited. The airline was initially associated with Stanley Ho and developed from a plan to provide regional fixed-wing services from Hong Kong. It received permissions during 2005 to carry passengers, cargo and mail to selected mainland Chinese destinations and became the Asian launch operator of the Embraer E170 regional jet. Its first aircraft were leased E170s, and its first scheduled passenger service began between Hong Kong and Guangzhou in September 2005. Additional mainland routes, including Hangzhou and Ningbo, followed later that year, while services to Chiang Mai and Chongqing began in 2006. In August 2006, HNA Group agreed to acquire a 45 percent stake in the airline. The investment formed part of HNA's broader effort to expand its international presence through Hong Kong-based aviation companies. HK Express remained a Hong Kong-registered airline, but its ownership and strategic environment changed substantially. The carrier later introduced Boeing 737-800 aircraft and received approval in 2008 to operate services to Beijing and Shanghai, broadening its role beyond secondary-city regional flying. The most important operational change occurred in 2013. Management announced that the company would transform into a low-cost carrier and use HK Express as its principal brand. Low-cost services began in October 2013, initially covering five Asian destinations. The airline expanded particularly quickly into Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia, while moving toward an Airbus A320-family fleet. The new model separated the airline from Hong Kong's traditional full-service carriers and emphasized affordable base fares supported by optional services. During the expansion period HK Express added customer-facing services and partnerships. It launched the Reward-U loyalty programme in 2016 and introduced U-Explore, an activity-planning service developed with Klook, in 2017. The airline's rapid growth also brought regulatory scrutiny. In September 2017 it cancelled 18 flights during a major holiday period, affecting more than 2,000 passengers. The Civil Aviation Department subsequently required a detailed report and temporarily restricted the airline from adding new flights, routes or aircraft. In 2018 the carrier also apologized for a street-sign advertising activity that officials considered potentially confusing and unauthorized. Cathay Pacific began discussing a possible acquisition in early 2019. In March it agreed to purchase HK Express from HNA Group-related interests for HK$4.93 billion. The proposed transaction faced objections from a shareholder of an intermediate holding company, but the acquisition was completed on 19 July 2019. HK Express became wholly owned by Cathay Pacific and withdrew from the U-FLY Alliance. Cathay Pacific retained the brand and stated that HK Express would continue to operate independently as a low-cost carrier alongside its full-service parent. The COVID-19 crisis then interrupted the airline's operations. HK Express suspended flights from 23 March to 30 April 2020, announced another suspension in June and prepared a gradual restart from August. The airline subsequently rebuilt its network as travel conditions improved, including services to Taipei, Kaohsiung and Singapore. Fleet renewal continued under Cathay Pacific ownership: the first Airbus A320neo joined in 2016, while Airbus A321neo aircraft ordered for the airline began arriving in 2023. A rebranding in 2023 introduced a revised livery and a stylized “e” tail symbol, replacing the earlier Hong Kong skyline treatment. HK Express continues to operate as Cathay Group's dedicated low-cost airline for regional Asian travel.
