Overview

Ignitis Group, legally Ignitis grupė AB, is a Lithuanian state-controlled energy holding company headquartered in Vilnius. Its present identity was created in 2019, when Lietuvos Energija adopted the Ignitis Group name and reorganized several operating businesses under the Ignitis brand. The group’s corporate lineage, however, reaches back to Lietuvos Energija, founded in 1991 as a vertically integrated state electricity and heat enterprise. It is therefore both a relatively recent consumer-facing brand and the successor to a much older public energy institution. The group’s central business is the operation of Lithuania’s electricity distribution network through Energijos Skirstymo Operatorius. This network activity places Ignitis close to households and businesses, although the group also operates in competitive supply and customer-service markets. Through Ignitis UAB, it supplies electricity and natural gas and provides related services including energy-efficiency solutions, solar products and electric-mobility services. The group’s customer proposition is increasingly organized around helping households and companies produce, purchase, manage and use energy rather than simply selling a commodity. Renewable generation is the other major pillar of the business. Ignitis Renewables develops wind and solar projects in the Baltic region and Poland, including both onshore and offshore opportunities. The group has pursued offshore-wind tenders in the Baltic Sea and has worked with international infrastructure partners on projects in Estonia. It has also announced expansion plans in Latvia involving solar farms, additional wind and solar investment, and electric-vehicle charging infrastructure. These activities support Ignitis’s strategic positioning as an energy-transition company rather than a conventional fossil-fuel utility. Ignitis retains an important conventional and system-support role. Ignitis Gamyba operates the Elektrėnai Power Plant, the Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant and the Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant, while the group directly owns the Vilnius Combined Heat and Power Plant. These assets provide generation, balancing, reserve and system-capacity services as Lithuania and the wider Baltic region integrate more intermittent renewable generation. The group’s operations therefore span regulated networks, generation, storage, reserve capacity, energy supply and customer solutions. The Republic of Lithuania, through the Ministry of Finance, remains the controlling shareholder. Ignitis completed an initial public offering on 7 October 2020, with shares listed on Nasdaq Vilnius and the London Stock Exchange. The offering raised approximately EUR 450 million, while the state retained a 74.99 percent controlling stake. Ignitis is therefore a publicly listed company with a strong public-policy mission, exposed both to capital-market expectations and to Lithuania’s energy-security and decarbonization priorities. Geographically, the group’s primary base is Lithuania, but its development portfolio and commercial activities extend across Latvia, Estonia, Poland and Finland. Its strategic themes include regional renewable generation, electrification, energy resilience, customer digitalization and modernization of Baltic energy infrastructure. In July 2024, it transferred equipment from the Vilnius thermal power plant to help support Ukraine’s damaged energy infrastructure, as part of a broader Baltic regional assistance effort. Under the leadership of CEO and board chairman Darius Maikštėnas, Ignitis positions itself as a regional integrated utility focused on a cleaner, more secure and more flexible energy system.

History

Ignitis’s corporate history begins with Lietuvos Energija, established in 1991 as Lithuania’s vertically integrated state electricity and heating enterprise. It owned and operated most of the country’s electricity and heating assets, apart from the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. In 1997, it was registered as Lietuvos Energija AB and partially privatized. The Lithuanian government retained 86.5 percent of the shares, while employees received 8.5 percent and Sweden’s Vattenfall acquired 5 percent. During the early 2000s, the enterprise was reorganized. Generation companies including Lietuvos Elektrinė and Mažeikių Elektrinė, together with the eastern and western electricity-distribution companies, were separated from the parent. In 2007, Lietuvos Energija acquired an interest in UAB Geoterma, the owner and operator of the Klaipėda Geothermal Demonstration Plant. In 2008, Lietuvos Energija was transferred into LEO LT, a newly created energy holding structure. After LEO LT was dissolved in 2010, Lietuvos Energija became a subsidiary of UAB Visagino Atominė Elektrinė, the state-owned project company associated with the proposed Visaginas nuclear-power project. Lietuvos Energija also acquired Lietuvos Elektrinė that year. A further structural change occurred in 2012, when the electricity-transmission system operator Litgrid and the electricity-market operator Baltpool were separated from Lietuvos Energija and transferred to EPSO-G. In 2013, Lietuvos Energija AB changed its name to Lietuvos Energijos Gamyba AB, while its parent, Visagino Atominė Elektrinė, became Lietuvos Energija UAB. This created a clearer distinction between the operating generation company and the wider state energy holding. The group expanded its generation portfolio during the second half of the 2010s. In October 2017, it acquired the Vilnius Combined Heat and Power Plant, also known as Vilnius Power Plant-3, from Vilniaus šilumos tinklai. In 2018, it purchased Lithuanian wind-park operators Vėjo Vatas and Vėjo Gūsis, obtaining a 34 MW wind portfolio, and acquired a 50 MW wind-park project in Poland. These transactions reflected the group’s increasing emphasis on renewable generation and regional development. On 5 September 2019, Lietuvos Energija was renamed Ignitis Group. Several operating companies were rebranded at the same time: Lietuvos Energijos Tiekimas, Energijos Tiekimas, Gilė and Litgas were combined into Ignitis UAB; Lietuvos Energijos Gamyba became Ignitis Gamyba; and Lietuvos Energija Renewables became Ignitis Renewables. Most other subsidiaries were also renamed, while Energijos Skirstymo Operatorius retained its existing corporate name. The rebranding created a common identity for the group’s supply, generation, renewable-energy and customer businesses. Ignitis entered the public markets in October 2020. Its initial public offering was completed on 7 October, and the shares began trading on Nasdaq Vilnius and the London Stock Exchange. The offering raised approximately EUR 450 million, while the Lithuanian state retained a 74.99 percent controlling shareholding. In September 2021, Ignitis Group acquired 100 percent of Ignitis Gamyba after the subsidiary was delisted from Nasdaq Vilnius; Energijos Skirstymo Operatorius was also delisted as part of the group’s ownership consolidation. In the 2020s, Ignitis has concentrated on renewable expansion and Baltic energy resilience. In 2023, it and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners won a tender to develop offshore-wind areas Liivi 1 and Liivi 2 in Estonia. The group has also outlined investments in Latvian solar farms and broader wind and solar development, as well as plans for a fast-charging network. In 2024, it announced plans to seek a partner for a second Lithuanian offshore-wind tender covering approximately 700 MW. In July of that year, Ignitis transferred equipment from its Vilnius thermal facility to aid Ukraine’s electricity infrastructure. The group now operates as a publicly listed but state-controlled regional utility, with regulated networks, generation, reserve capacity, energy supply and renewable development at the center of its portfolio.
