Overview

Intel is an American multinational semiconductor company headquartered in Santa Clara, California. It designs and manufactures computing and communications components for consumer, commercial, enterprise, and government customers. Its principal businesses have included central processing units, server processors, chipsets, graphics processors, network interface controllers, memory products, and semiconductor manufacturing services. The company was incorporated in 1968 by Gordon Moore, Robert Noyce, and investor Arthur Rock after Moore and Noyce left Fairchild Semiconductor. It initially concentrated on semiconductor memory, producing early SRAM and DRAM products. Its 1103 DRAM became a commercially important memory product in the early 1970s. Intel's most consequential early product was the 4004, introduced in 1971 and widely recognized as the first commercially available microprocessor. Later processors such as the 8086 established the x86 instruction-set family that became central to personal computing. During the 1980s, competition from Japanese memory manufacturers weakened Intel's memory business. Management therefore shifted the company's strategic emphasis toward microprocessors, supported by the growth of IBM-compatible personal computers. The 80386 and its successors made Intel a leading supplier to PC manufacturers. During the 1990s, the combination of Intel processors and Microsoft Windows—often called “Wintel”—helped define the dominant PC platform. The Pentium brand and the Intel Inside program also made a previously invisible component recognizable to consumers. Intel's position was challenged from the 2000s onward by AMD, changing PC demand, mobile computing, and delays in some manufacturing transitions. The Core microarchitecture, introduced in the mid-2000s, restored much of Intel's performance leadership. Apple adopted Intel processors for Macintosh computers from 2006 until its later transition to Apple-designed silicon. Intel also attempted to expand into smartphones, tablets, mobile communications, solar technology, and other adjacent markets, but several of these initiatives were discontinued or sold. In the 2020s Intel broadened its strategy beyond internally designed processors. Its IDM 2.0 program emphasized renewed process-technology investment, expanded manufacturing capacity, and Intel Foundry as an external semiconductor-manufacturing business. Its product portfolio includes Core and Core Ultra PC processors, Xeon data-center processors, Arc graphics products, networking components, and manufacturing technologies such as Intel 18A. Intel remains an important x86 supplier and one of the most significant semiconductor manufacturers, although it operates in a more competitive market shaped by AMD, Arm-based designs, Nvidia, TSMC, and other specialized chip companies.

History

Intel was incorporated in Mountain View, California, in July 1968 by Gordon Moore, Robert Noyce, and Arthur Rock. The founders came from Fairchild Semiconductor and initially targeted semiconductor memory, which was expected to replace magnetic-core memory. Intel's early products included Schottky bipolar memory, static RAM, ROM, and MOS memory. The 1103 DRAM, introduced in 1970, became a commercially important product and helped establish Intel's manufacturing reputation. In 1971, Intel introduced the 4004 microprocessor, developed from a calculator project involving Busicom. Although the initial business remained centered on memory, the microprocessor created a new category of general-purpose integrated circuit. The 8008, 8080, and 8086 followed, with the 8086 becoming the origin of the x86 processor family. Intel expanded manufacturing internationally, opening facilities in Malaysia and later assembly and production operations in Singapore, Israel, China, India, and other locations. By the early 1980s, Japanese competition had made DRAM less attractive. Intel shifted decisively toward microprocessors, and IBM's personal computer helped create demand for Intel's x86 products. The 80386 and later generations made Intel the leading supplier to PC manufacturers. Andy Grove, who became chief executive in 1987, oversaw a period of rapid expansion. The Intel Inside program, begun in 1991, linked the Intel name with computer quality and helped make the processor a visible consumer brand. Pentium processors became especially prominent during the 1990s. Intel's dominance was challenged in the 2000s by AMD, slowing PC growth, and the rise of mobile devices using Arm-based processors. The NetBurst architecture was criticized for power consumption and performance trade-offs, but the Core microarchitecture restored Intel's competitive position. Intel also diversified through acquisitions and investments, while selling or closing activities that did not fit its core strategy. Apple adopted Intel processors in 2006, giving the company an important role in Macintosh systems. The company attempted to compete in smartphones and tablets with Atom processors, but the effort was ultimately discontinued. Manufacturing execution became increasingly important as Intel faced delays in new process nodes and stronger competition from AMD and foundries such as TSMC. In 2021, Pat Gelsinger announced IDM 2.0, a plan to expand internal manufacturing, build new capacity, and offer foundry services to external customers. Intel Foundry and advanced process technologies became central to the company's effort to regain manufacturing leadership while continuing to develop PC, server, networking, and graphics products.

The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Anderson v. Intel Corp. Investment Policy Committee, a lawsuit filed in 2019 by a former Intel employee alleging that Intel retirement-plan fiduciaries breached their duty by investing in hedge funds and private equity that underperformed. Lower courts had rejected the claims, holding that underperformance alone is not enough without a meaningful benchmark. During the arguments, several justices appeared receptive to Intel's position, and legal experts said the Court seems likely to side with Intel.
