Overview

Mobileye is an Israel-headquartered autonomous-driving technology company founded in 1999 by Hebrew University professor Amnon Shashua. It began by commercializing academic research in computer vision: cameras and software that could recognize vehicles, road markings and other driving conditions without requiring the expensive sensor suites then associated with automated driving. The company developed into a major supplier of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), automotive system-on-chip technology and autonomous-driving platforms. Its central technology family is EyeQ, a purpose-built automotive processor used with Mobileye perception and driving software. EyeQ-based systems support functions such as forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, traffic-jam assistance, intelligent headlamp control and traffic-sign recognition. Mobileye supplies both production systems integrated into new vehicles and aftermarket products for fleets and existing vehicles. Its customers and partners have included BMW, General Motors, Ford, Volkswagen, Nissan, NIO, Geely, Toyota, ZF, Mahindra, Porsche and others, although individual programs and relationships have changed over time. The company expanded beyond conventional ADAS through Road Experience Management (REM), which uses anonymized, crowdsourced observations from equipped vehicles to build and update detailed road maps. It also developed Responsibility-Sensitive Safety (RSS), a mathematical framework intended to formalize cautious and legally defensible behavior for autonomous vehicles. Mobileye's autonomous-driving portfolio has included SuperVision, a camera-centered hands-off driver-assistance system; Mobileye Drive, a Level 4 platform combining cameras, lidar and radar; Chauffeur, a planned hands-off and eyes-off system for specified driving environments; and Surround ADAS, a multi-sensor system aimed at mass-market vehicles. Intel agreed to acquire Mobileye in 2017, making it an Intel subsidiary while preserving Mobileye as a distinct automotive technology business. Intel later returned the company to the public markets. Mobileye's 2022 Nasdaq offering made only a minority portion of the shares available to public investors, while Intel retained majority ownership and substantially greater voting control. Mobileye therefore operates as a publicly traded company under Intel's control rather than as an independent company with dispersed ownership. The business has also pursued mobility services and autonomous shuttles. It worked with Volkswagen on a proposed mobility-as-a-service program in Israel, conducted robotaxi trials with NIO vehicles, and announced or tested autonomous mobility projects with partners in Europe, Israel, Japan, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. In 2020 Intel's acquisition of Moovit was intended to strengthen the broader mobility-services opportunity around Mobileye. More recently, Mobileye has described its scope in terms of physical artificial intelligence, including autonomous vehicles and, subject to completion of the announced transaction, humanoid robotics through Mentee Robotics. In 2025, the company announced workforce reductions amid weaker demand and revenue conditions, indicating a period of regrouping while it continued to develop automotive autonomy and ADAS products.

History

Mobileye emerged from Amnon Shashua's academic work at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Founded in 1999, the company sought to make road perception commercially useful through relatively inexpensive cameras combined with specialized software. Rather than treating automated driving as solely a robotics problem requiring a large number of costly sensors, Mobileye emphasized computer vision that could be embedded in production vehicles. The company established its first research center in 2004 and introduced the first generation of its EyeQ processor in 2008. EyeQ enabled production driver-assistance functions, including automatic emergency braking and vehicle detection. Early adoption included BMW programs, among them the fifth-generation 7 Series, while Mobileye also supplied lane-departure and related systems for General Motors Cadillac models and BMW 5 and 6 Series vehicles. New EyeQ generations followed in 2010, 2014 and 2018, progressively increasing processing capability for more complex perception and automated-driving workloads. Mobileye's financing and commercial scale grew rapidly. In 2013, investors acquired a 25% stake in a transaction that valued the company at about $1.5 billion. In 2014, Mobileye listed on the New York Stock Exchange, raising approximately $890 million and becoming the largest Israeli initial public offering in U.S. history at that time. By the end of that year, its technology had reportedly been incorporated into 160 vehicle models from 18 original-equipment manufacturers. The company broadened its ambitions from individual safety functions to autonomous driving. In 2016 it partnered with Delphi on an autonomous-driving system and later announced relationships involving BMW, Volkswagen, Nissan and other automakers. In 2017, Shashua and Shai Shalev-Shwartz published the Responsibility-Sensitive Safety concept, which attempted to translate ordinary driving norms such as caution, right of way and responsibility into formal rules for automated systems. Shalev-Shwartz became chief technology officer in 2019. Mobileye also developed REM, a mapping system based on anonymized data gathered from production vehicles, and pursued sensor redundancy by combining camera, lidar and radar inputs. Intel's 2017 acquisition changed Mobileye's ownership. Intel announced a tender offer worth approximately $15.3 billion, and Mobileye became an Intel subsidiary. The transaction generated an insider-trading enforcement action by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission against people alleged to have traded using information about the forthcoming deal; the cited allegations did not accuse Intel or Mobileye themselves of illegal trading. After the acquisition, Mobileye continued to work with automakers and mobility companies. It conducted robotaxi-related trials, including work with NIO, demonstrated camera-only autonomous driving in Jerusalem in 2020, and pursued autonomous-shuttle and delivery-vehicle projects with Transdev ATS, Lohr Group and Udelv. Partnerships also covered Ford, Geely, Toyota, ZF, Mahindra, WILLER and others. Intel acquired Moovit in 2020 to complement the mobility-services strategy. Intel announced in 2021 that it intended to return Mobileye to the public markets while maintaining control. The Nasdaq offering took place in 2022, with public investors receiving a minority interest and Intel retaining Class B shares and near-total voting power. Mobileye subsequently continued developing production-oriented platforms, including SuperVision, Drive, Chauffeur and Surround ADAS. In 2023 it announced a SuperVision collaboration with Porsche. In 2025 it announced a workforce reduction amid weaker demand and revenue. In 2026 it announced an agreement to acquire Mentee Robotics, a company co-founded by Shashua, reflecting a possible expansion from automotive autonomy into a broader physical-AI portfolio.
