Overview
JAC Group, officially Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Corp., Ltd., is a Chinese vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Hefei, Anhui. The company produces light, medium, and heavy commercial vehicles, passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, multipurpose vehicles, vans, pickups, and electric vehicles. It operates principally under the JAC name, while also using or having used marquees and product families including Refine, Sehol, and JAC Yiwei. Through partnerships, JAC has also participated in electric-vehicle manufacturing, intelligent-vehicle development, engine production, overseas assembly, and contract manufacturing for other automotive companies. The business began in 1964 as Hefei Jianghuai Automobile Factory. Its early activity centered on commercial trucks sold under the Jianghuai name. The company expanded beyond trucks during the 2000s, adding multipurpose vehicles and sport utility vehicles and developing a passenger-vehicle business. Before receiving an independent passenger-car production license, JAC worked with Hyundai Motor Company and assembled Hyundai-based multipurpose vehicles from 2003. Some vehicles derived from that cooperation continued after the formal relationship ended. JAC changed its corporate name to Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co., Ltd. in 1997 and became publicly traded in Shanghai in 2001. Commercial vehicles remained its historical strength, but the company increasingly invested in passenger cars and electrification. It announced an electric-vehicle program in 2010, subsequently producing battery-electric versions of several passenger models and establishing dedicated electric product families. In 2012, vehicle sales exceeded 445,000 units, and in 2013 JAC ranked among China's ten largest vehicle manufacturers by production. The group has pursued international growth through direct exports, distributors, knock-down assembly, and local manufacturing. It began exporting to Bolivia in 1990 and later expanded to more than one hundred countries, with light trucks becoming an important export category. Overseas activities have included assembly arrangements in several developing markets, a Brazilian distribution and proposed manufacturing relationship, market entry in the Philippines, and a manufacturing joint venture with Giant Motors in Mexico. Partnerships have been central to JAC's recent development. JAC and Volkswagen created an electric-vehicle joint venture in 2017, initially associated with the SEAT name and subsequently operating as Volkswagen Anhui, with the Sehol brand used for vehicles developed through the cooperation. JAC also manufactured vehicles for NIO beginning with the ES8 and later formed a 50:50 manufacturing-technology venture with NIO. NIO announced in 2023 that it would acquire the factories producing its vehicles, ending that original-equipment-manufacturer arrangement. In 2024, JAC and NIO agreed to cooperate on battery standards, battery swapping, swapping networks, and operations. JAC has also announced cooperation with Huawei on premium intelligent electric vehicles under the Maextro brand, and in 2025 worked with Northern Ireland's Wrightbus on the Rightech electric truck sub-brand. Today, JAC's portfolio combines conventional commercial vehicles with passenger and electric vehicles. The company maintains research and development capabilities in Hefei and overseas centers in Turin, Tokyo, and Seoul. Its strategic position is that of a broad Chinese vehicle group using commercial-vehicle expertise, electric platforms, manufacturing partnerships, and international distribution to compete across multiple segments.
History
JAC Group traces its origins to Hefei Jianghuai Automobile Factory, established in 1964 in Anhui province. The enterprise initially concentrated on commercial vehicles, particularly trucks, and built its reputation around the Jianghuai product name. In 1997 it adopted the corporate name Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co., Ltd. and in 2001 became publicly traded on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. During the 2000s, JAC broadened its product range. It introduced multipurpose vehicles and sport utility vehicles while continuing to emphasize trucks. The company cooperated with Hyundai Motor Company and began assembling Hyundai multipurpose vehicles in 2003. Although the cooperation ended before 2007, JAC continued producing certain vehicles influenced by Hyundai technology. In 2007, Chinese authorities approved JAC for passenger-car production, allowing the company to develop a more independent passenger-vehicle business. The Chinese government's encouragement of automotive-sector consolidation in 2009 prompted speculation that JAC might combine with fellow Anhui manufacturer Chery. JAC stated that it was not interested in such a consolidation. Instead, the company increased its emphasis on passenger cars and announced an electric-vehicle program in 2010. Production and sales grew substantially: the group reported more than 445,000 vehicles sold in 2012 and ranked among China's ten most productive vehicle manufacturers in 2013. JAC also developed an international operating model based on exports, local distributors, knock-down kits, and overseas assembly. It began exporting to Bolivia in 1990 and later reached more than one hundred countries. Commercial trucks were particularly significant in international markets. The company explored manufacturing and distribution cooperation in Brazil, entered the Philippines through a local partner, and established a Mexican manufacturing joint venture with Giant Motors. JAC vehicles and kits have also been associated with assembly activities in countries including Egypt, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Mexico, and Iran. Electrification became increasingly important in the 2010s. JAC produced battery-electric variants of passenger models under the iEV name and participated in international electric-vehicle projects. In 2017, JAC and Volkswagen announced a Chinese electric-vehicle joint venture. The venture initially involved the SEAT name, but it subsequently operated under the Sol brand and later became associated with Volkswagen Anhui. JAC continued using the Sehol name for a range of passenger vehicles, although it announced plans in 2023 to phase that branding out and return some models to the JAC name. JAC's partnership with NIO made it an important contract manufacturer of electric vehicles. The first mass-produced NIO ES8 entered production through JAC in 2018. In 2021, the companies created Jianglai Advanced Manufacturing Technology and extended their manufacturing agreement. NIO later announced the acquisition of the relevant JAC factories in 2023, ending JAC's role as NIO's original-equipment manufacturer. The relationship subsequently continued in a different form through cooperation on battery standards and battery swapping. The group has pursued additional technology and premium-market partnerships. In 2023, JAC and Huawei agreed to work together on premium electric vehicles using Huawei's intelligent automotive solutions. Huawei later presented Maextro as a new brand developed with JAC, with the S800 identified as its first model. In 2025, JAC and Wrightbus introduced the Rightech collaboration for electric trucks, extending JAC's commercial-vehicle capabilities into a jointly branded international offering. JAC's current identity therefore combines a long-established commercial-vehicle business with passenger vehicles, battery-electric products, contract manufacturing, intelligent-vehicle partnerships, and overseas operations. Research and development is based in Hefei and supported by overseas facilities in Turin, Tokyo, and Seoul.
