Overview

LG Electronics Inc. is a South Korean multinational electronics and appliance company headquartered in Seoul and operating as a major affiliate of LG Corporation. The company was founded in 1958 under the name GoldStar, during South Korea’s post-war industrialization, with the purpose of developing domestically manufactured consumer electronics and household appliances. Its early products included radios, televisions, refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners. The business benefited from the expansion of national broadcasting and from technical cooperation with Japanese electronics companies, helping it establish a broad domestic manufacturing base. GoldStar began exporting in the 1970s and opened an overseas production facility in Huntsville, Alabama, in 1982. During the 1990s it shifted from a primarily domestic manufacturer to a global technology brand. The company acquired the American television manufacturer Zenith in 1995, adopted the LG Electronics identity and logo during the same period, and expanded into digital mobile communications, displays and advanced television technologies. Its work in plasma and LCD displays, including the LG.Philips LCD joint venture established in 1999, helped position the wider LG group as a significant participant in the global display industry. Today, LG Electronics is organized around four principal business areas: Home Appliance Solution, Media Entertainment Solution, Vehicle Solution and Eco Solution. Its portfolio includes OLED and LCD televisions, monitors, audio products, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, microwaves, vacuum cleaners, garment-care products, air conditioners, heat pumps, commercial displays, HVAC systems and automotive electronic components. The company also develops webOS, its smart-TV and connected-device platform, and LG ThinQ, an ecosystem for connected appliances, home automation and artificial-intelligence-enabled services. The LG brand is particularly associated with premium televisions, OLED display technology, design-led appliances and connected-home products. LG Signature represents a high-end design and appliance proposition, while ThinQ links appliances, televisions and other devices through software and network services. The company formerly operated a substantial smartphone business, producing devices under the Optimus, G, V and Velvet families, but announced in April 2021 that it would leave the mobile-phone manufacturing market after years of losses and competitive pressure. LG has also made vehicle components a strategic growth area. It established a vehicle-component business in 2013, acquired a majority interest in Austrian automotive lighting supplier ZKW Group in 2018, and formed LG Magna e-Powertrain with Magna International in 2021. This business supplies technologies such as infotainment, vehicle displays, lighting and electric-vehicle powertrain components. The company has additionally entered electric-vehicle charging through its acquisition of a majority stake in AppleMango in 2022. LG Electronics sells through retailers, distributors, telecom operators, online channels and business-to-business relationships in many regions. Its manufacturing and research network spans South Korea, North America, Europe, Asia and other markets. Although the company remains strongly identified with consumer electronics, its current strategy places increasing emphasis on recurring software and services, smart-home connectivity, energy-efficient appliances, HVAC, commercial solutions and automotive technology.

History

LG Electronics was founded in 1958 as GoldStar by Koo In-hwoi, the founder of the group that became LG. The business was created during South Korea's postwar reconstruction and pursued domestic production of consumer electronics that had previously been imported. GoldStar manufactured radios, televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners, helping establish a local electronics supply base and bringing household appliances to a growing Korean consumer market. During the following decades, GoldStar expanded from basic consumer products into research, manufacturing, exports, and industrial electronics. It became associated with South Korea's broader transformation into a major technology-manufacturing economy. The company's activities increasingly involved semiconductors, displays, telecommunications, appliances, and international distribution. It also built overseas production and sales capabilities, allowing the brand to compete outside Korea rather than serving only its home market. In 1995, GoldStar was renamed LG Electronics. The change formed part of the Lucky-GoldStar group's wider effort to create a unified international identity around the LG name. The new brand was presented as more modern and globally accessible, while the company's product range broadened across televisions, appliances, information technology, mobile communications, and business equipment. LG invested heavily in industrial design, international marketing, display technology, and manufacturing scale. The company became a significant global television maker and developed a strong association with flat-panel and later OLED displays. Its television business used several brand and technology families, including LCD-based products, NanoCell, QNED, and OLED. LG also developed webOS into a smart-TV operating system and later extended the ThinQ name across connected appliances and home devices. These software platforms helped shift the company from selling stand-alone hardware toward connected products and recurring digital services. LG's mobile-phone division produced feature phones and smartphones under the LG name. It introduced technically distinctive products, including models with wide-angle cameras, modular designs, dual-screen accessories, and other experiments intended to differentiate the business. However, the division faced sustained pressure from Apple, Samsung, and rapidly expanding Chinese competitors. On April 5, 2021, LG announced that it would close the mobile-phone business worldwide. The wind-down was completed later that year. This was a major portfolio decision: LG redirected investment toward home appliances, televisions, automotive components, connected platforms, robotics, and other businesses with stronger strategic prospects. The company has also expanded its vehicle-components activities. Through acquisitions, joint ventures, and internal development, LG has built capabilities in infotainment, vehicle connectivity, lighting, motors, inverters, battery-related systems, and other automotive technologies. Its acquisition of the automotive lighting company ZKW and its joint venture with Magna strengthened this direction. LG Innotek and LG Display, although separate LG-group companies, also contribute to the wider group's automotive and component ecosystem. In appliances, LG has increasingly emphasized premium design, energy efficiency, inverter technology, artificial intelligence, remote management, and product coordination through ThinQ. Product families such as InstaView refrigerators, WashTower laundry systems, CordZero cleaning products, and residential air-treatment systems support a broader smart-home proposition. In displays and business technology, LG continues to sell monitors, commercial displays, projectors, laptops, and specialized signage for enterprise and public environments. LG Electronics is currently a publicly traded operating company within LG Group, headquartered in Seoul. It serves consumers, businesses, retailers, hospitality customers, automotive manufacturers, and other institutional clients in markets around the world. Its contemporary identity rests on a combination of premium consumer electronics, major appliance scale, OLED and display expertise, connected-home software, and a growing vehicle-components business.
