Overview
Metroline is a bus company serving London and Greater Manchester with a combined fleet of over 1,800 buses, working closely with partners such as Transport for London and Transport for Greater Manchester. It was formed in 1989 as a subsidiary of the publicly owned London Buses Limited, was privatised in October 1994 through a management and employee buyout, and has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore-based ComfortDelGro since March 2000. In London, Metroline employs over 4,700 people and operates more than 14 sites, including bus garages and a purpose-built engineering facility called the Central Engineering and Logistics Facility (CELF).
History
Metroline was formed in 1989 as a subsidiary of the publicly owned London Buses Limited, a prelude to the deregulation of bus services in London and the eventual privatisation of the company; plans for deregulation were shelved in 1993. In October 1994 Metroline was privatised in the form of a management and employee buyout. In July 1997 Metroline floated on the stock exchange, and Metroline Travel became the bus operating subsidiary of Metroline Plc. In August 1998 the purchase of MTL London from MTL was completed, almost doubling the size of the bus operation, and Metroline Plc purchased Scottish Citylink from National Express. In February 2000 DelGro Corporation, a Singaporean based investment company focused on transport businesses, offered to purchase Metroline, and in March 2000 the sale of the company to Delgro was confirmed. In January 2001 Aerdart, a Dublin based bus company, was formed, making Metroline the first UK operator to enter the Irish bus market. In April 2003 DelGro Corp merged with Comfort Group, forming ComfortDelGro. In August 2004 Metroline announced the purchase of privately owned London bus operator F. E. Thorpe and Sons Ltd, and in November 2004 it announced the purchase of E. H. Mundy Holdings Ltd, which operates buses and coaches in London under Armchair Passenger Transport Company Ltd. In 2006 the coaching side of Armchair was amalgamated with the ComfortDelGro subsidiary Westbus, and in January 2007 the F.E. Thorpes and the bus side of the Armchair business were absorbed into the main Metroline operation.
