Overview

Red Bee Media is an international broadcasting and media-services company owned by Ericsson. It provides operational and technology services to broadcasters, content owners, sports organizations, pay-television operators, streaming platforms, and commercial brands. Its activities include channel playout, master-control-room operations, media management, content distribution, video-on-demand preparation, electronic programme-guide data, content discovery, subtitling, signing, audio description, compliance, encoding, editing, interactive television, and creative production. The business developed from BBC Broadcast, a commercial division established by the BBC in 2002 to bring channel-creation and channel-management activities together and generate income alongside the television licence. In 2005, BBC Broadcast and its subsidiaries were sold to Creative Broadcast Services, a vehicle established by Macquarie-related investors. The business adopted the Red Bee Media name in October of that year. Its subsequent expansion combined acquisitions with the integration of broadcast-technology operations inherited through Ericsson. Red Bee built an international footprint through acquisitions and local operating businesses. It acquired Australian Caption Centre commercial operations in 2006, adding captioning and accessibility capabilities; opened a Paris subtitling operation; acquired German subtitling and translation provider Titelbild in 2008; and acquired Spanish subtitling and audio-description company Mundovisión later that year. Its Dutch operations trace their history to the privatization and restructuring of production and broadcast facilities associated with the Dutch public broadcaster NOS. In the United States, the company absorbed Technicolor’s broadcast-services division in 2012 and acquired television-data and metadata provider FYI Television in 2016. In 2011, Red Bee purchased TV Genius, a content-discovery software company serving internet, television, and connected-device environments. Ericsson announced its acquisition of Red Bee in 2013 as part of a broader effort to expand in broadcast and media technology. The transaction was reviewed by the United Kingdom Competition Commission because of concerns about concentration in television channel playout, but clearance was granted in February 2014 and completion followed in May. In 2015 the operation was placed under the Ericsson brand as Ericsson Broadcast and Media Services. In 2017 Ericsson announced that the business would again use the Red Bee Media name and operate as an independent Ericsson-owned unit, a structure that also left open the possibility of a future sale. The company serves broadcasters including the BBC, Canal+, Channel 4, ITV, Sky, TV4, TV5Monde, and UKTV, along with corporate and commercial customers such as Barclays, Bacardi, and Hyundai. Its infrastructure has supported hundreds of television streams across terrestrial, satellite, cable, web, and mobile distribution, as well as major UK video-on-demand services. Red Bee also operates creative-services capabilities through Red Bee Creative, which has worked on entertainment identities, promotional material, trailers, and advertising campaigns. Its sports-graphics product Piero provides three-dimensional analysis and visualization for televised sport. Red Bee remains a business-to-business infrastructure and services provider rather than a consumer-facing entertainment brand. Its importance lies in the operational layer between content production and audiences: preparing, scheduling, packaging, localizing, making accessible, and distributing programming across linear television and digital platforms. The company’s 2021 London broadcast-centre incident demonstrated the concentration of these services, when an evacuation and subsequent damage to servers and storage disrupted numerous UK television channels and accessibility feeds.

History

Red Bee Media originated in the BBC’s commercial reorganization of the early 2000s. BBC Broadcast Limited was created in 2002 to consolidate channel creation, channel management, and related technical services that had previously been distributed across the BBC. The structure was intended to generate commercial income and complement the public broadcaster’s licence-fee funding. BBC Broadcast operated alongside other BBC commercial entities, including BBC Worldwide, BBC Resources, BBC Ventures, and BBC Technology. On 1 August 2005, BBC Broadcast and its subsidiaries were sold for £166 million to Creative Broadcast Services Limited, a purchaser established by Macquarie Capital Alliance Group and Macquarie Bank. The new owner renamed the business Red Bee Media on 27 October 2005. Shortly before the sale, BBC Broadcast had acquired Broadcasting Dataservices from BBC Worldwide, strengthening its electronic-programme-guide, metadata, and listings capabilities. Red Bee expanded beyond the United Kingdom through acquisitions and new operating units. In 2006 it acquired the commercial operations of the Australian Caption Centre, which were rebranded Red Bee Media Australia in 2007. A non-profit successor retained the remainder of the captioning organization. Red Bee opened a subtitling operation in Paris in 2007, acquired German subtitling and translation company Titelbild Subtitling and Translation in March 2008, and bought Spanish subtitling and audio-description provider Mundovisión in October 2008. These transactions broadened the company’s localization and accessibility services and strengthened its position in European media markets. The Dutch business has a more complex institutional lineage. It descends from broadcast-production activities connected to the Dutch public-broadcasting system and the Netherlands Broadcast Production Company, which was created following the 1988 privatization of part of the public broadcaster’s operations. After later restructuring and ownership changes, the business became part of Technicolor and then Ericsson’s broadcast-services organization. The Dutch subsidiary provides network-control, media-management, recording, transcoding, master-control-room, subtitling, and translation services for public, commercial, regional, and sports broadcasters. In August 2011 Red Bee acquired TV Genius, adding software for content discovery across web, television, and connected devices. In July 2012 Ericsson acquired Technicolor’s broadcast-services division, adding further operational and technical capabilities. Red Bee also acquired US television-data company FYI Television in January 2016. These moves complemented Red Bee’s existing services in playout, metadata, video-on-demand, and distribution. Ericsson announced its acquisition of Red Bee Media on 1 July 2013. Because the combination could affect competition in the UK television channel-playout market, the transaction was referred for competition review on 30 September. Clearance was granted on 27 February 2014, and Ericsson completed the acquisition on 12 May. From 1 June 2015 the operation was presented under Ericsson’s brand as Ericsson Broadcast and Media Services. On 9 November 2017 Ericsson announced a return to the Red Bee Media identity and a more independent operating structure, while retaining full ownership. Red Bee’s service portfolio spans linear and digital distribution. It operates or supports channel playout, master-control-room functions, media management, compliance, encoding, editing, interactive television, electronic programme guides, content discovery, and video-on-demand workflows. It also supplies access services such as subtitles, captions, signing, and audio description. Red Bee Creative provides design, advertising, promotional, and trailer production, while its Piero system supplies three-dimensional sports-analysis graphics. The company’s UK client base has included the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5, ITV, Sky, UKTV, and other broadcasters. Its systems have supported domestic and international television streams distributed through terrestrial, satellite, cable, web, and mobile channels. In September 2021, an incident at the London broadcast centre exposed the operational dependence of multiple channels on shared technical infrastructure. The evacuation and activation of fire-suppression equipment damaged servers and storage, taking numerous services off air or disrupting their continuity and accessibility feeds. The event led to complaints about subtitle and audio-description interruptions and was reported to UK broadcasting regulator Ofcom.
